maxtox,

I'll help you sometime today. You have serial console so it is definitely not bricked :) be patient, don't try anything until I post.

Bodhi,

Can you recommend any USB adapter from Amazon to unbrick Pogoplug E02?

Thanks

For Pogo E02, you don't need any adapter, just use a Sandisk brand, USB 2.0 thumb drive.

If you meant a USB hub, then it's depending on which USB drive you will plug in the hub. If you have a USB 3.0 thumb drive and to want use it with the Pogo E02, it's best to use a USB 3.0 hub (it will negotiate the speed down to the USB 2.0 ports on the Pogo E02).

Sometime it will work to use a USB 3.0 thumb drive and plug it in directly to the port. But since the Pogo E02 hardware is too old, it might not.

I guess he/she wants an usb-ttl adapter to get serial console?

Ah :) in that case, any CP2102 adapter would work. Like this one,

https://www.amazon.com/HiLetgo-CP2102-Converter-Adapter-Downloader/dp/B00LODGRV8

But really, you'd need to try them. It's low cost (~6 USD and fast shipping). Waiting for one coming from China costs 2-3 USD would take 2-3 weeks.

You are in good shape when you got to this point.

But the USB rootfs was not recognized by u-boot. So redo the USB rootfs as described in the rootfs installation thread.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Make sure you use Ext3 partition, and use command line to format it. If it was done using GUI on another Linux box, you need to doublecheck the partition format.

Also try using another USB drive (Sandisk brand is best for booting).

Ext4 partition is OK too. But care must be taken to avoid lazy init issue.

Hi, bodhi,

Thank you for quick response. I am not clear how to do usbfs. I don't have linux machine. only mac and windowspc. so I cannot follow the steps like apt-get and dpkg command. any more instruction on how to do it on nonlinux machine?

Thank you very much.

You don't need to do any apt-get or dpkg while creating rootfs. This is the section for rootfs creation:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Quote

Updated 26 Sept 2021:

Basic Debian bullseye Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 234M
- install size: 668M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see Notes below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, u-boot-tools, and mtd-utils.
- see LED controls examples in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

You can create the USB rootfs using a Linux Live CD or USB. Or using the Linux installation USB (see Linux Mint site, for how to download the image).

And from there, you must gain root to be able to untar the rootfs tarball correctly.

========

Mac OS could do the same thing as Linux, but you'll need to install the command tools to format an Ext3 partition, IIRC.

You can run also run cywin on Windows to get a Linux command line and access tar, fdisk, mkfs.ext3 commands.

Hi, bodhi,

I am confused. are you saying I should create bootable usb rootfs from linux first. boot into linux root and run your installation steps in

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

Where can I find detail instruction on how to create usb roofs from the start. I googled and found too many sites, not sure which one is good to use. Your suggestion please....
Hi, bodhi,

I followed this instruction https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/burn.html to create a bootable linux mint usb drive. what should I do next?
Hi, bodhi,

I followed your instruction at Updated 26 Sept 2021 for rootfs creation. and created a usb boot drive.

now I am getting the boot message from pogoplug E02. anything I did wrong?

This error indicates that the rootfs was not created correctly.

So you tried to use (or upgrade the kernel), which is not necessary. The rootfs instruction said:

Quote

Note: If this is your first time installation, then you only need rootfs Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (this has kernel linux-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 already installed). Please scroll down to 26 Sept 2021 section for download link and installation instruction.

It means the rootfs should be used as is. There is no need to do anything further, it will boot into kernel 5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1.

And later, after booting successfully, you can proceed to upgrade the kernel to the latest, which is linux-5.17.4-kirkwood-tld-1 (27 Apr 2022).

And another error is that you did Step 4 in the instruction. It should be done for stock u-boot only. You have installed the latest u-boot (U-Boot 2017.07-tld-1 (Sep 05 2017 - 00:13:18 -0700) Pogo E02).

Quote

4. (Stock u-boot only) Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time, or running kwboot with latest u-boot image).

So the rootfs is done after Step 3. You can worry about the Notes below the instruction after you have booted successfully.

Please do that, and then try booting and post the serial boot log here!

Hi, bodi,

Thank you for your help. Here is the result after fixing the usb boot drive.
Is this a successful boot to debian? what should I do next?

It was a successful boot. But you don't have network.

Quote

No DHCPOFFERS received.

So reboot

shutdown -r now

And interrupt serial console at count down.

Quote

Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0

Execute

printenv

See that you have the MAC set to the local MAC (not the real one).

ethaddr=52:3b:20:9c:11:51

Some router is picky, and will not assign IP addr when you change MAC addr. You did not set to the real MAC during u-boot installation.

So set it to the real one for this box. Look outside the case, the MAC address is printed there on the label (replace xxxxxxx below with the real number).

setenv ethaddr xxxxxxxxx

and then

boot

Once you logged into Debian, you can also set it permanently. But first let see if you will get an IP address this time.
And post the serial console log here again.

OK so the change did not stick. But your router took the local MAC 52:3b:20:9c:11:51 anyway and generated the dynamic IP.

DHCPACK of 192.168.1.231 from 192.168.1.1

If you like, keep using the local IP. Or later change it in Debian using fw_setenv to make the real MAC address permanent.

Now on your Mac OS erminal you can log in the Pogo through SSH.

The root credential is root/root.

And verify that you can see how Debian see it:
ifconfig -a

And also verify that you can see the u-boot envs in Debian:
fw_printenv

Congratulations! you're good to go.

Actually another package

Quote

Updated 26 Sept 2021:

Basic Debian bullseye Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 234M
- install size: 668M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see Notes below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, u-boot-tools, and mtd-utils.
- see LED controls examples in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Important Correction:

After releasing this rootfs,

1. I realized I've missed one package that needs to be installed in order to make fw_printenv and fw_setenv available (these binaries have been moved to package libubootenv-tool in bullseye) . So do this if you want to list or set envs in Debian.
apt-get install libubootenv-tool

2. There was an obsolete source in /etc/apt/source.list. Please change the old security repo to
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free

You'll need to do both 1 and 2 in the release notes, as described above.

ddl2000,

Cool! so you see the MAC address in u-boot is

> ethaddr=52:3b:20:9c:11:51

It's a local MAC address that I generated for the u-boot installation. You can either continue using it (good to mask your real MAC address to avoid being tracked on the net). But you can also set it to the real one with fw_setenv.

fw_setenv ethaddr 00:25:31:04:73:C3

If you have another Kirkwood box that you will install new u-boot to, then it is best to set to the real MAC to avoid confusion to the router. If this is the only Kirkwood box you'll use, then you can keep using the default 52:3b:20:9c:11:51.

All system goes now. You can browse the Wiki thread for topics that you are interested in.
