Just in case someone run into this: trying to set the box to boot from USB I couldn't permanently set envs from Debian:
After changing mtd1 addresses
vi /etc/fw_env.config 

# MTD device name       Device offset   Env. size       Flash sector size

/dev/mtd1               0x0000          0x2000          0x1000
I could get correct printout from fw_printenv. But after running fw_setenv, it stopped working ("Cannot read environment, using default. Cannot read default environment from file"). So I managed to permanently set variables from U-boot as follows:

This is confusing and caused me to have issues! The MicroJST on both of my examples is P4 and has pins 1 and 4 labeled. With front of unit with power facing me the MiroJST header is on the left side of the board with Pin 1 to the back and Pin 4 to the front. Therfore pins are as follows:

1. - 3.3V (not connected with most devices). I'm using μArt (uart-adapter.com) so I have it connected.
2. - RxD on μArt
3. - TxD on μArt
4. - GND on μArt

Uses standard 115200 8N1 that most Marvell SoC based devices use.

Orientation. We should not be too rely on marking, because it could change from on production lot to the next.

"Left-to-Right, Inside facing out" means "Reading from left to righ, from inside the case facing outward)".

The photo in that post appears to be for a HP t5325 not the t5335z which is very different in appearance. See the photos at https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/images/8/8b/HP_t5335z_Top.jpeg showing P4 at the top of the photo which doesn't look similar in any way to photo in that post.

OK when I have a chance, I'll open up the T5335z to verify. It was a long time ago, but I did record that layout in my notes for HP T5335z. It could be that my T5535z and T5325 have the same serial pins layout.

Hi Guys. I'am trying to install Debian on USB and have some troubles...

What I did:
1. Format USB to EXT3 with 1 partition
2. Extract Debian-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 to that partition
3. Run:
cd /media/rootfs/boot
cp -a zImage-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/dove-hp-t5335z.dtb >> zImage.fdt 
mv uImage uImage.bak
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-6.6.2-mvebu-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync
4. Unmount, remove and insert USB to HP T5335z.
5. Break U-Boot.
6. Run:
setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'

Right, it is not working. The graphics card is too old, and its Marvell Dove driver is not well tested in mainline Linux. I hope to have some free time in the furture to try out the Linux kernel Dove DRM, it might work with some basic settings.

However, there is not much of a motivation since this box is low in RAM and CPU speed. My original goal was to run it headless.

I don't know what happend, but now I can't boot from USB permanently.
ENV variables for permanent boot from USB are just dissapeared and I can't set them again.

Now, I can only terminate U-Boot, enter env-vars and boot from USB, but after Debian has loaded and I enter:
fw_setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
, and after run command:
fw_printenv
, I got result:
root@debian:~# fw_printenv
Cannot read environment, using default
Cannot read default environment from file

But fw_env.config looks fine:
root@debian:~# cat /etc/fw_env.config
# MTD device name       Device offset   Env. size       Flash sector size       Number of sectors

I had a similar problem, you can try to save variables from U-Boot. Worked for me. Commands in my previous post.

Usually, this problem is related to the mtdparts in the bootargs. But I can pinpoint to the problem and explain it better if you also post tthe serial boot log, or at least the dmesg log.

Please post the entire serial boot log.

These are logs of 'serial' and 'dmesg'. USB with working Debian is attached.
Boots stock OS.

I can provide any logs within 4 hours at least. May be more.

I don't think you'll find anything new there. Something just reset the variables that are layed in MTD... May be stock firmware does it, whan i boot it? But why I can't write them again?...

What petruchito did was OK when we have serial console access. But there are scenarios where there is no serial console. So it's best to ensure we can access and write to u-boot envs inside Debian.

It seems like either something has changed in the mainline kernel. Or your box uses a different SPI flash chip.
