newbie question: Linux kernel on MTD1

Tried to install Wheezy on a new USB stick with instructions from http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,8722 and got error message: "FATAL: kernel too old" on my Dockstar. One workaround is to update the kernel on MTD1. My question is how the kernel on MTD1 affects the installation of Wheezy on a USB stick? Does wheezy use modules from the kernel?
