How To use syslog?

Hello,

I want to use in Debian Squeeze the utility logger in a shell script, but it does not work.
Also I found no file /var/log/syslog.

I have seen 2 possible solutions:
1. busybox syslogd
2. Debian package syslog-ng

But I have not found any installation directives. It should not conflict with /var/log/messages.
I have seen in "ps-A" no klogd and syslogd by the way. How is the logging done?

It´s not done ;)
System install with debootstrap is absolutely minimal.

Try the package rsyslog. It´s the syslog daemon currently used.

If you want a debian standard install:

apt-get install tasksel-data
tasksel install standard

I installed the package busybox-syslogd on my DockStar. It provides a very lightweight syslog built into busybox. It doesn't write to /var/log/syslog, just keeps the log in memory, which you can examine with the "logread" command.

I have installed package rsyslog and watching it.

I just have a concern about wearing the USB-Stick. Let's see.

Thank you for reporting about the package busybox-syslogd. I was not aware, that such a package exists.

If rsyslog is too verbose, I will switch to busybox-syslogd.
