Unbrick Synology DS414J
March 16, 2023 08:30AM
My Synology DS414J file server crashed , there is no access from the network side , it does not want to initiate operation , after turning on the power LED blinks all the time .

I hooked up to the serial the result below

AdamOSA,

I don't know much about Barebox. So I can only have an educated guess.

> I do not start LAN (in the descriptions the
> possibility to repair the kernel through the
> terminal),

Try to ping the network to see what will happen. For example if your router IP is 192.168.0.1, then

ping 192.168.0.1

Given the booting sequence is like this in the log

Quote

booting kernel of type uimage from /dev/spi0.kernel -r /dev/spi0.rootfs

use initrd /dev/spi0.rootfs

> usage: update -t
> <kernel|rootfs|barebox|bareboxenv> -d <nor|nand>
> [-m tftp|xmodem|ddr] [-f imagename|-a address] -c

The above command looks like the right one. Here the most user friendly way to update the kernel is using tftp. So you need to set up tftp first.
update -t rootfs  -d nor -m tftp -f spi_rootfs
where spi_rootfs is the name of the original rootfs in the /tftproot folder. You might be able to find this image at Sylonogy website.

As I said, I'm not using Barebox, so the above are suggestions only.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond

I took a small step forward today . When loading the bootloader gives you the option to abort before loading ( CTRL + C key combination ) . I took advantage of this , ran the dhcp command and got an IP from my network range . Unfortunately PING to the network or vice versa gives no result . Changed the entry after printenv command . But I still can not set up cooperation with Tftpd running on 192.168.8.100 . On TFTP command tries to download from IP 0.0.0.0

dhcp works then it is all good. So do a printenv to see what's the current envs look like
printenv

Most likely the serverip is not defined, so define it and then try tftp again
setenv serverip 192.168.8.100

So Synology actually removed the setenv command!

> And that's what I don't understand
> ip=none
> nameserver=192.168.8.1

It means the router is set with the correct IP address. But the ip is not set (IP address for this box). Do this
dhcp
printenv
Hopefully we will see ip= 192.168.8.111

======

The interface is actually more user friendly than u-boot. You can use the ls command to browse the /env folder.

ls /env
and drill down to see if you can find the env file.

As you can see, barebox has a way to update the internal envs.

type update -t bareboxenv -d <nor|nand> [-m tftp|xmodem|ddr] [-f imagename|-a address] to update bareboxenv into flash

How about /env/bin ?

Quote

1.9.4. /env/config
This file contains some basic configuration settings. It can be edited using the edit - a small full-screen editor command. Typical content:

#!/bin/sh

# change network settings in /env/network/eth0
# change mtd partition settings and automountpoints in /env/init/*

#global.hostname=

# set to false if you do not want to have colors
#global.allow_color=true

# user (used for network filenames)
#global.user=none

# timeout in seconds before the default boot entry is started
#global.autoboot_timeout=3

# key to abort autoboot. Supported options are: "any" and "ctrl-c"
#global.autoboot_abort_key=any

# list of boot entries. These are executed in order until one
# succeeds. An entry can be:
# - a filename in /env/boot/
# - a full path to a directory. All files in this directory are
# treated as boot files and executed in alphabetical order
#global.boot.default=net

# base bootargs
#global.linux.bootargs.base="console=ttyS0,115200"
When changing this file remember to do a saveenv to make the change persistent. Also it may be necessary to manually source /env/config before the changes take effect.

It should be something like

eth0.ipaddr=192.168.1.191
eth0.serverip=192.168.1.139
