This is a hard one to do "fancy repairs" :) The NAND flash (which is where the system is) is bad. The saving grace is it's an ARM box and run u-boot. So you would need to find the FW first (backup or installation image). And in u-boot console, you would erase NAND, hoping that all the bad blocks are gathered and put away by the flash controller. And then flash it.

You could also consider installing a Linux OS on the device as it is supported by the mainline Linux kernel. See https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/arch/arm/boot/dts/vt8500/wm8505-ref.dts which is the device file for Wondermedia WM8505 Netbook.

how would i do all this?
Re: Sylvania model synet7wid
August 14, 2024 01:04AM
I've had a few of these Sylvania netbooks and a couple have bricked themselves in this same way. I'm guessing cheap NAND and being powered off for a long time was the culprit. I was able to fix them by re-flashing Windows CE with one of the upgrade images Sylvania released many moons ago.

Since I can't seem to find it online anymore, I've reuploaded it here -- https://drive.google.com/file/d/15CuCaBuNny4NJ8yCeipHCzX4mesjXlDV/view

Format an SD card to FAT32, I'd probably make the partition no larger than 2 GB since it can be fussy. Extract the ZIP file onto the card, ensuring the "script" folder is in the base directory. Then insert the card into the netbook and boot. It should automatically erase and re-flash the internal NAND with a clean copy of Windows CE.

I, uh, may also have a Github repo with Debian specifically for these netbooks -- https://github.com/lrussell887/Debian-for-WM8505-Netbooks
Even if the NAND is fried, this runs entirely off of the SD card. Mainline is missing support for the keyboard among other things so this uses a kernel based off linux-vtwm. I only found this post because I ended up Googling `uzImage.bin` while looking over some things lol.

Also this forum seems right up my alley wish I had found it sooner.
