Debian-6.5.7 on NSA325
February 02, 2025 02:32PM
Hello everyone,

I got a NSA325 for free and want to install Debian on it.
I followed the tutorials and could successful flash u-boot 2023.04 Kirkwood onto it.
Then I followed this tutorial (https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096) to boot from usb. Now, after hours spent trying to do so, I seek for help.

When turning the NAS on, this log shows up:

Hereux,

When you flashed the new u-boot, you've missed an important part:

Quote

6. Flash default u-boot envs image

If you are upgrading from 2017.07-tld-1 u-boot, you can skip this step. But some envs will need to be updated before reboot. See Note section below after the installation steps. Especially if your rootfs is SATA, then you must adjust the env described in Note section "C.1.1 SATA boot envs". Or if you are using netconsole then you must adjust the env described in Note section "C.1.2 Netconsole envs".

Be extra careful with the next 2 commands, you should see output that look like below. If there is error, then do not reboot, post your problem here so we can help.

Erase 1 block
flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0xc0000 1
Expected output:
Erase Total 1 Units
Performing Flash Erase of length 131072 at offset 0xc0000 done

Write the image
nandwrite -s 786432 /dev/mtd0 /tmp/uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.environment.img
Expected output:
Writing data to block 6 at offset 0xc0000

There is a couple different ways to to recover from this. Let's try the easiest approach.

Power up, interrupt the u-boot count down, and

resetenv
printenv

And post the entire serial console log here. So I can take a look (only as a precaution, because I already know what it looks like). And then I'll post the next step.

"resetenv" is not recognized as a command, so I just did "env default -a" which should do the same thing but just not permanently?
At least I can't make it worse with it.

Please let me know if it is what you wanted and how I should continue. And sorry for the message delay, but since I live in germany the timezone may differ.

Edit: I just tried to boot after resetting with "env default -a" and it at least tries to boot from usb now! But it obviously failed.

You did it correctly! that resetenv was deprecated, my muscle memory type resetenv but it should be env default -a!

Sure, we are all over different locations worldwide. This is the time I usually post.

Yes. It's expected. I could have shown you how to boot with the default envs, but just want to make sure the envs are OK first.

Now we go back to the u-boot installation instruction.

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,135222

C.2.2 Using boot.scr to recover from damaged or corrupted envs NAND block

Included in the tarball uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.bodhi.tar is the script file uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.boot.scr. This is a Distro-Boot-compliant boot script. It can be used to recover from a damaged/corrupted envs NAND block, or if the envs NAND block has never been flashed (same as corrupted).

So for whatever reason, if in serial console, U-Boot reported the CRC error while loading the envs, using the boot.scr will provide a minimalist booting envs and enable booting into Debian. And then the default envs image can be flashed.

- Mount the USB rootfs on another Linux box. Assuming it is mounted at /media/sdb1.

cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.boot.scr boot.scr
sync

- Unmount and then bring it back to the NSA325. Power up and let it boot automatically. The boot.scr should come into play, and allow booting to Debian.

So do the above and power up but don't boot automatically. Your envs are not corrupted, it just has the wrong set.

Interrupt countdown and at the u-boot prompt,
env default -a
boot

After booted into Debian. You should continue with section 6 and 7. Don't do 8 because you have serial console.

6. Flash default u-boot envs image
7. Restore MAC address

1. Note: As you can see, I tried it like you said. Since it failed, I tried saving the env, which indeed did help, but didn't work completely either.

2. Note: I always get interrupted when trying things out, because of some kind of auto u-boot reboot if that makes sense? No matter what I do, it suddenly interrupts me and just prints U-Boot 2023.04 ... again and then starts the autoboot countdown.

Since I couldn't find a failure in the logs, I think it also does it's reboot while booting into the kernel. After trying multiple times, it stops on the exact same position, so it isn't as likely as I thought?

The behavior indicates that very likely the rootfs is bad. Try recreating the rootfs.

When creating the rootfs, you need to do exactly as described in the instruction (no substitute for any command). Become root (not sudo), use command line mkfs.ext3 to format the rootfs as ext3, sync a few times after extract the tarball,..... Every detail in the instruction is important.

Hello bodhi,

unfortunately I don't have good news. I tried 2 times to reinstall rootfs on the stick, but it still has the same error.
To make sure I did nothing wrong when installing, here are the commands:

su -

fdisk -l
fdisk /dev/sdd1

d (delete all partitions)
n (create new partition)
p (primary partition)
1 (partitionnumber)
Enter
Enter
w (write changes)

mkfs.ext3 -L rootfs /dev/sdd1
# Takes about 15 minutes

mkdir /media/sdd1
mount /dev/sdd1 /media/sdd1

cd /media/sdd1
tar xjf /home/ubuntu/Downloads/Debian-6.5.7-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2
# Takes about 5 minutes, but the stick continues to blink for like 20 minutes

sync
sync
sync

cd /media/sdd1/boot
cp -a uboot.2023.04-tld-1.nsa325.boot.scr boot.scr
sync
sync

cd
umount /media/sdd1

# Now insert into nas
kwboot -D /dev/ttyUSB0 -t

# insert the power cord

#interrupt autoboot
env default -a

# as before the first time without saveenv, the second time with saveenv, which will give a much longer output
boot

There was no change in the output. Note: I use a Ubuntu Live USB Stick to create the Debian stick, since I have no pc with linux installed.
I do have some knowledge because of linux servers, but I have Windows installed on my computer and laptop. Until now I didn't notice any problem with that, even logging in as root in the console seems to work fine too. "root@ubuntu:~#".

If you have any tips, then I will try them tomorrow. But if it does not work tomorrow, I will take a little break from this, but I won't give up. I already spent some afternoons and hours on it.

Hereux,

Don't run kwboot. Use minicom, or picocom if the Ubuntu USB Live has it. You've already flashed u-boot to NAND. You can also use putty on Windows.
