Sorry for the delay in replying to your suggestion.
I tried your suggestion and some other different things in the U-Boot
environment to try and get the Pogoplug to boot Debian from a Sata
disk first and got nowhere. I gave up trying to be clever and I have
gone back to the environment listed in this post -

which works as described in my post above.
If someone can point me to the changes required to the U-Boot environment
so that the Pogoplug tries to start from a connected Sata disk drive first,
falling back to a USB stick if the Sata disk is absent/fails.
Edit - As a sanity check, the Sata disk I prepared boots the system and
works as expected when I put it into an external USB HDD enclosure and
start the Pogoplug Pro with it connected.
