Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sdd1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

Re: PogoV4 not booting and no ethernet connection

theeleaper,

[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sdd1 rootdelay=30 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:2M(u-boot),3M(uImage),3M(uImage2),8M(failsafe),112M(root)

The reason it is not booting is most likely the root device was set to /dev/sdd1.

1. If you have only this USB drive attached
[ 13.684757] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access PNY USB 2.0 FD 1100 PQ: 0 ANSI: 4
then that root device should be /dev/sda1

2. If you want to boot the box while there is more than one devices (USB, SD card,...) then you will need to use the root label approach:
- The USB rootfs partition should be labeled rootfs
- The root device in the bootargs should be:
root=LABEL=rootfs

Do this:
- interrupt serial console Putty session
- execute this command:
printenv
- Post the listing of your envs here and I'll show how to fix it, if you're not sure how.

And also describe how many devices you want to attach to the Pogo when it is booting.

Re: PogoV4 not booting and no ethernet connection
July 28, 2015 03:32PM
theeleaper,

There are a couple things need adjusted.

1. But first, your boot drive is a Transcend USB stick. It's not a bad drive. But for rootfs purpose, you should use a better brand such as Sandisk, to ensure successful booting.

2. Your booting by label has not been properly set up yet.
The root device has to be root=LABEL=rootfs in the bootargs:
[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=30 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:2M(u-boot),3M(uImage),3M(uImage2),8M(failsafe),112M(root)

3. Your Arch rootfs is type Ext4, is that correct? if it is Ext4, then the rootfstype in the bootargs should be rootfstype=ext4. It's OK to boot using ext3, but the inconsistency might cause problem. So either use Ext3 for Arch rootfs, or adjust the bootargs to use Ext4.
[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=30 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:2M(u-boot),3M(uImage),3M(uImage2),8M(failsafe),112M(root)

For number 2 and 3. If you not sure, please post your latest u-boot envs, I'll take a look and post the correction.

Did it boot? if not, unplug all other drives, and then try to boot with only the rootfs drive. Make sure it boots OK, then worry about booting with multiple drives.

Booting with multiple drives:
-------------------------------------

And I forgot that you are using Arch! You will need to generate initrd so that you can boot with rootf label.

OTOH, if you'd rather not do that, then the other approach is:

- Find the PART UUID of the partition
- Use this PART UUID in the bootarg to boot.

The problem with Arch distro is you don't have initrd available in the distribution. So you have to either generate initrd to use the partition label, or format your drive with GPT partition to identify the root device using PART_UUID in bootargs.

Using UUID of the partition (not PART_UUID) might work, but I'm not sure Arch will like it.

Think about it and let me know if I can help further in this subject.

No it did not boot..what do you recommend over Arch?

theeleaper,

If you don't really have a preference, then try booting with Debian rootfs. It is a little easier to deal with when booting with multiple drives:

Cool!

After logging in this rootf the first time, remember to change password and generate new SSH key to make it your own unique rootfs. And also update your rootfs to get the latest Debian package updates:

passwd

rm /etc/ssh/ssh_host*
ssh-keygen -A

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

As for Samba, there are many posts in the forum that show how. Please search the forum for it (search button is in the upper right corner). If you can't find them then let me know.
