Thanks for your great work!

I finally took the plunge and flashed the uboot.2015.10-tld-1 on my NSA310. I hade a couple of bad blocks on
00040000
00060000
but I did some reading and decided to take my chances on 'nand scrub 0x0 0x80000' and it worked. However, after reboot it seems that I cannot detect the SATA SSD disk properly anymore. I get only garbled description and wrong specs ending in SSD unreadable. It is a 16GB SSD that is formatted in three partitions. Partition 1 is boot in ext2 with uImage & Uinitrd. Partition 2 empty ext4. Partition 3 ext4 labeled "rootfs" with root on it.

Boot with USB rootfs and see how SATA behaves in Debian. It could be just the SSD. Did the stock u-boot detect this SSD OK before?

I had it running Debian before on original u-boot for very long time. No problem with detect this SSD or any other HD before. Can it be so nasty that specific code for detect HD landed on bad block?

Anyway, I will try fire up a USB system and get back with a print on that..

Anything abnormal happened when you flashed new u-boot and u-boot envs? do you have a log for that?

Regarding the bad blocks, it is really not a problem if the NAND has these bad blocks on its list. I would have had a good workaround for you even with the bad blocks in those areas.

But if you scrubbed NAND, and they disappear then I'd say that your NAND right now is not reliable.

No, nothing got my attention when flashing. I got OK and good response when scrub and flash so no red lights there. I didn't keep any logs of the event but it went by pretty much flawless. Basically a couple of lines of OK response. I did not flash your envs yet as I like to get the basics done before make it advanced. ;)

I'm on the road for the moment but once back on base I will try reflash back the old u-boot and see what it gives. Obviously I will have to do it from USB so hopefully that part of code will fly.

You could always run kwboot and boot into Debian with USB or SATA rootfs. That would be a good test to see if your flashed u-boot has problem.

Ok, finally got some time to look at this again! Apparently it was the SSD that was problematic, with a regular 2.5" HDD it was detected in U-Boot. After unpacking you rootfs Debian-4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 in the 1st partition (only one) and naming the partition "rootfs" it boots (FAST, great work!) but hangs after unpacking the kernel. Did I miss something regarding the device tree? It said nothing in instructions for the rootfs installation..

Yes this is the problem with missing u-boot env to boot with the device tree DTB.

1. You have missed this section and did not flash the default envs image:

Quote

8. Flashing default u-boot envs image:

. A special section (B. Flashing default u-boot envs image) about flashing default u-boot envs is included at the end of this installation procedure. Please follow the instruction in this section B to perform this step before continuing with step 9.

So that was why the DTB was not setup properly.

2. To fix this, go a head and download the env image tarball:

This tarball includes 2 files:

uboot.2014.07-tld-3.environment.img (the default envs image to be flashed)
uboot.2014.07-tld-3.environment (the content of the default envs in text format)


3. Boot with your rootfs into Debian, create a uEnv.txt file (if you can't boot then mount this rootfs on another Linux box and create this file):

cd /boot
cp -a uboot.2014.07-tld-3.environment uEnv.txt

4. Edit the uEnv.txt to adjust the DTB name

dtb_file='/boot/dts/kirkwood-nsa310.dtb'

Also adjust other envs if you like to do so now. But just the DTB and the rootfs label env in this default image, will get it boot into Debian.

5. Then sync and reboot

This uEnv.txt will be in effect during boot only. So after booting into Debian, flash the default env image using the instruction in section B.

Thanks for reply!

Added uEnv.txt to /boot and edited it according to your instructions. Still same error with exact same output as before. Tried with arcNumber=4022 for what is what worth, still no go. Seems like uEnv.txt doesn't get picked up? I get no message as of doing so anyway..

Keep the uEnv.txt that you have edited in step 4. Don't change it further.

- Power up the box, and interrupt serial console

I realize when I look at my post that tune2fs -L /dev/sd* did not stick. It's still named Linux filesystem. I should have noticed.. Will use gdisk and redo process..

Too bad that your rootf is on your SATA disk, if it were on a USB then it is much more manageble. This problem is quite easy to solve with USB drive where you can unplug it and mount on another Linux box. But anyhow, we'll fix it in your configuration (but if your HDD does not have anything in it, then consider booting USB first).

Power up and interrupt serial console, and then

Yes, I could go the USB route ofcourse but my intention is to make use of the second SATA (eSATA) channel and hide a mini-SSD with a running system in the chassies. It would be nice to have a streaming box running even without a 3.5" disk in it.. Even do hot-swap ;)

Something is wrong about your rootfs.

I think your best approach right now is to create a USB rootfs type Ext3. Using the Debian 4.4.0-kirkwood-tld-1 like you did before. And boot with that, and examine your SSD rootfs.

Note that the USB rootfs will need to have a different label. So label it usb_rootfs to make it different from the main SSD rootf. And then boot it this way:

Apparantly my USB-SATA adaptor did not play justly because after mounting the disk directly on SATA in my server and copy rootfs + uEnv.txt it booted right up following your instructions. I happily flashed uboot.2014.07-tld-3.environment.img and applied my machine specific values + SATA delay and it all now runs perfectly! Happy dude here!

Sync meaning making sure the writes to disk are all commited.

On any Linux terminal, after you edit, or tar, or do anything that writes to disk, execute command:

sync

On Linux GUI, you can right-click the disk icon, and "Safely Remove" or "Eject".
