A little off topic. But we mentioned something about this in this thread.

Rpi zero and Rpi zero W are currently $3.14 (for Pi day promotion) in Microcenter local store now.
Limit one at that price as usual.

I guess you can also use them as JTAG tool for these small linux boxes.
joerg_999 has some posts on this topic with Rpi 1,2 3.

Nice and thank you. I will probably get 1x for both an Rpi 0 an Rpi 0 W.
Re: steam link hacks

I was actually VERY close to Microcenter today, but I did not enter the store since its email said only Rpi 0 was $3.14, Rpi 0 W was $5.

Tonight I checked the web site and found out Rpi 0 W is $3.14 also, but MicroCenter is 35 miles away now...

@feas & davidyder,

Thank you both for the info so far! It's very helpful.

One thing I'm eagerly looking for is the bootlog that show how the kernel started. But so far everybody has posted only partial log, because the yaffs errors rolled it off to /dev/null.

When I have time to have a handons look on my box, willl see if it has the same error.

Just went to pick up both Rpi 0 and Rpi 0 W from a local Micro Center, a total of US $6.28 + 6% tax = US $6.66. ATM, I still don't l know what to do with these, yet.

If anyone is still interested in the kexec approach, a developer and I got this working but we had no display output. We booted into Arch Linux but we could do the same with debian

Our steps have been documented on this website and I hope you can get some improvements on the display

We have already email Slouken (Dev) and he told us that:
1. Kexec wasn't supported
2. The Armada-1500 Mini drivers that were used were the proprietary Marvell drivers and they were open source

Hope you can pick it up again soon. With so many Steam Link lying around, it would be a shame not to put Debian on them :)

Any chance you will ever take a look inside the steam link anytime soon? If you don't plan to, I might as well get rid of the 5 steam links I stocked up.

It certainly will be nice if we can replace the stock uboot to run other OSes, i.e. ARMbian, Kali Linux, OpenWRT/LEDE, etc.

As usual, I don't really know when I will start looking at a new box.

Thanks, at least for the fast and honnest answer :). I will wait a bit longer then. Didn't cost too much anyway.

Playing a bit with the serial console, looking into where this customer key is stored, seems like it's going to be part of the key to unlocking Uboot.

Customer key found, loading customer key...
Loading Secure Customer Key Store is finished
Loading Secure Customer Key Store is finished
Finish loading Customer Key store
bootloader image verified, start...

Cheers

after googling, I found out that your text is like the console output from Google Chromecast:

https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2438715

Would be nice if you could tell us more about what you did. And what does that really mean for us? Can we boot from USB like described, or can we even use this to install debian on the internal flash?

Thanks :D

Hi guys,

Bottom of this Steamlink, there are 4 screws. Did you need to unscrew them or did you just pry open the case?

Very happy to hear that you are now working on the steam link.
Re: steam link hacks

AngryCoder,

Yes, now the hard part is that I've never learned to solder properly :)) so I need to buy some parts to connect serial console. This serial port does not have solder buttons to jiggy up temporary connections.

davidyer mentioned that he cannot interrupt serial console while the box is starting. Is that true for you too? or anybody has tried and saw the same behavior?

Bodhi,

Would it be possible for you to take the snapshot of the serial port you want to solder and post it here?

daviddyer already did and posted that in this thread. He did a really good job :) I downloaded that pic to add to my Steamlink notes.
