Hi bohdi, Thanks for the headsup. I will be copying your post to a notepad and try to trim it to the basics and see if it makes any sense. I will post here my doubts and maybe you can clear them up for me. Thanks in advance. Cheersby john3voltas - uBoot
Hey there. As per my signature, I have an old Dockstar from 2009 which is running U-Boot 2014.04.R4-1. I have read the U-Boot updates sticky post but it seems kind of confusing. I would like to know if there is any simple way to update it's U-Boot or maybe someone could break it down a little for me. Thanks in advance. Cheersby john3voltas - uBoot
I have to admit that it's exactly what I had in mind but if no one else replies I will give it a try. One of the reasons why I wanted a new cable is that the stock/current cable is very small. So thanks bodhi :)by john3voltas - Off-Topic
Hi, I don't like the little USB connector on the Dockstar. I don't have any external device with that kind of USB connector. So I was wondering, are there any USB female cables that have that particular kind of 5 pin header on the other end? Something similar to this but I'm sure this one has the wrong header on it. http://img.dxcdn.com/productimages/sku_103392_1.jpgby john3voltas - Off-Topic
Hi bodhi. Thanks for your reply. I guess I'll do that first. But if it doesn't drastically lower the dockstar temperature I will go back looking for heat sink alternatives. Thanks mate.by john3voltas - Off-Topic
Greetings :) I have been the happy owner of a Seagate Dockstar for some 4 or 5 years now. Lately I have noticed that it is running veeery hot. I haven't done any real measure with a thermometer or something like that but I can assure you that I can't touch the surface of the "rubber-like" heat sink that stands on top of it's Sheeva CPU for more than a couple of secondsby john3voltas - Off-Topic

I guess I'll stick to Jeff's rescue system, then. Too chicken to do it manually and afraid to brick anotherby john3voltas - Rescue System
Let me see if I get this straight. I have Jeff's rescue system installed and you say there's a newer rescue from Davy's? Should I install Davy's instead? Can you link me to the topic where Davy's rescue system is posted? Quote OTOH, It is really does not matter when you install a rescue system. You could do that from a full Debian system. These last 2 sentences I doby john3voltas - Rescue System
First I want to fix it in Rescue System and then I'll think about installing Debian or Arch in a pendisk. I'm not sure I understand what you mean in your last post. Do you mean that Jeff's Rescue System doesn't come setup to get an IP lease automatically? Because to me the Rescue System will not be of much use if it doesn't get an IP on boot. To me it looks like itby john3voltas - Rescue System
Hi bodhi, As promissed, here goes boot log. Please note that the ethernet cable was connected to my Dockstar before powering it up and I never disconnected that cable. Also note that at the end I did a udhcpc -i eth0 and the device successfully retrieved an IP address from the server. Hi bodhi. Yes, I have. My current uBoot is from 2012. In a couple of hours I'll post a boot log so you can see. Thanks. Cheersby john3voltas - Rescue System
It's been quite a while since I last posted here. Sorry for not having posted before but suddenly life got difficult and I lost track of what I was doing... Since things are finally starting to get on the right tracks I decided to re-post my DHCP issue. I still can't get an IP address on my Dockstar on bootup. This happens no mather what OS is running. Ok, borrowed a serial from a friend and tried again. bodhi, I have posted 2 logs. One was from the Rescue System (2.6.32 Kernel) and the other one is an ArchLinuxARM (3.1.10 Kernel). Am I right assuming that the Rescue System is read-only and that my current uBoot should be able to boot it up? Because if it's read-only it can't get corrupted, right? As for ArchLinux, I don't think they still have rootfs prior to 3.1 Kernel. Boby john3voltas - Rescue System
Thanks bohdi. BTW, did you look at my Dockstar uBoot logs? If so, what do you think? (This time) I am really going to order the cable but would I would be glad to solve this prior to the arrival of the serial cable. Thanks in advance. Cheersby john3voltas - Rescue System
(previous subject was "Can't connect to Dockstar" because I didn't notice that after booting the box was lacking an IP address) 1 or 2 years ago I installed both Jeff Doozan's uBoot and Rescue System. Then I ran Arch Linux for ARM during that period. A week ago, I had a power outage and after that my I haven't been able to connect to my Dockstar again. I canby john3voltas - Rescue System
My two partition set up is all about power outages. I usually have a lot of power outages at home. When that occurs more than 3 or 4 times, my dockstar won't boot anymore. Then I need to take the usb hdd out of the dockstar, plug it into my laptop, run fsck on it and then I can plug it back into my dockstar and it will boot again. This is a big set back especially because I have a lot ofby john3voltas - uBoot
Hello, I know that some will think that this is not a forum specialized in Arch Linux ARM, but it is booting Jeff's uBoot and I am having a hard time. My system is composed of a Seagate Dockstar. I'm trying to boot from an external USB HDD which has 2 partitions: - /dev/sda1 which has /boot and is formated as Ext2 - /dev/sda2 which has / and everything else (besides /boot) which isby john3voltas - uBoot
Thanks a bunch, Jeff. We'll try it down at plugapps, too. BTW, you could join us there on the irc channel, once in a while ;). Cheersby john3voltas - uBoot
Then you didn't have a problem. Plug devices with chained bootloaders will change between boot source on every reboot. BUT, I think they always boot from NAND when they are hard powered. So, you never had an issue, it was all working as expected. Cheers PS: anyone correct me if I'm wrong.by john3voltas - Debian

Hi peter, Would you give us an how-to on how you made your HSDPA/WiFi AP ? I would be very much interested in such a setup for a summer apartment we have. Pointless to rent an adsl for a only a couple of weeks, right? Speed is not my main concern. I just need browsing capabilities for a couple of WiFi clients in WPA2 with Firewalling enabled on the dockstar. CLI configuration is ok but web-by john3voltas - Debian
