Hi darkside40, Basically, you need a cross compiler setup. I am using a Ubuntu machine, and these instructions work fine: Download and setup cross compiler from here: http://general.nas-central.org/wiki/Setting_up_the_codesourcery_toolchain_for_X86_to_ARM9_cross_compiling Run these additional commands: cd /usr/local/codesourcery/arm-2009q3/bin/ ln -s arm-none-linux-gnueabi-objcopby dazealex - Debian
Hi gazza_d, Installing Transmission would give you a very top-of-the-line torrent client. To share files, samba is required, and/or netatalk (for the Apple machines). As for the web frontend where you could upload files to like box.net, I'm not aware of any packages, but that just means I haven't looked. Hopefully someone will chime in and tell us about it. In the meantime, I'llby dazealex - Debian
This mirror works for me: http://mirrors.xenir.com If you update Jeff's script to use that mirror, you should be fine. I've had the same problems. And am working on just creating a TAR file with a completely installed Debian Squeeze release.by dazealex - Debian
Hi twinclouds, I will be working on extending it to Squeeze. Thanks for the encouragement. Dazeby dazealex - Debian
Hi twinclouds, debootstrap can download all the required .deb packages and create a TAR file. Using this method, users can just download the TAR file which will have all of the required packages pre-downloaded. The advantage is that it will reduce the time required to download each individual package from the Internet, especially for those that are on slow links. The disadvantage is that someby dazealex - Debian

Hi Shyd, I have a working .deb file with the new kernel. Do I need to run these two commands after installing the .deb? /usr/bin/mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-2.6.38-dockstar -d /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-dockstar /boot/uImage /usr/bin/mkimage -A arm -O linux -T ramdisk -C gzip -a 0x00000000 -e 0x00000000 -n initramfs-2.6.38-dockstar -d /boot/iniby dazealex - Debian
Hi everyone, Is anyone interested in a Debian Squeeze based system with NFS, SAMBA, Transmission, SABNZBD, all pre-installed in a nice TAR file that you extract and Bob's your uncle? I've always been meaning to do this but never knew how to till I came across Jeff's script which uses debootstrap. Take care, Dazeby dazealex - Debian
Shyd, I didn't time it, but it took 5 minutes or so to complete the build. The error I was getting was due to objcopy running for X86 instead of ARM. So a sym link fixed that issue. Thanks for your help. By the way, I tried the Arch derivative for the DockStar, and it seems quite fast. I am not sure if that is because they used uclib or not. I have used Arch before, but I'm a Dby dazealex - Debian
Hi shyd, I am trying a fresh cross-compile. Let's see how it goes. I specified the -j 8 option so make-kpkg should run 8 threads on my Core i7 with Ubuntu. Thanks for the .config file. I'll post the results. Dazeby dazealex - Debian
Hi shyd, I tried cross-compiling with Jeff's instructions and .config file, but got an error: make[1]: Entering directory `/root/kernel/linux-2.6.38' CHK include/linux/version.h CHK include/generated/utsrelease.h make[2]: `include/generated/mach-types.h' is up to date. Has anyone tried building kernel 2.6.38? I am in the process of doing so. Does anyone know if I need the patches for the LEDs?by dazealex - Debian
Hi there. I followed all the steps, but I am still not producing arm binaries. My build host is running Ubuntu 10.10. What I'd like to know is if there is a special way to pass the arch info to ./configure, make etc. Can someone provide a step by step for compiling Transmission BitTorrent, for example? I'd appreciate it. Dazeby dazealex - Debian
I'd be interested if Jeff or anyone else can comment?by dazealex - uBoot
As others have pointed out, Patriot USB sticks are unreliable! The version I am using is the Patriot XT Rage 16GB. It does not cold boot. I have an old Dane-Elec 2GB USB stick lying around from my NSLU which I'll re-use. Hopefully, that will work. I'll post back if it does not.by dazealex - Debian
Hi everyone, I just picked up a DockStar for $50 off of Craig's List. I used Jeff's super simple script to install Debian and it seems to be working fine so far. This new toy of mine will replace my agin NSLU2 which is what I used to learn Linux on since 2004. Truth be told, learning Linux was the best thing that happened to me as it now puts bread on my table. Who knew hacking cby dazealex - Debian
