About once every six months the power goes off long enough that even my UPS gives up, which causes the DebianDock(dockstar with debian) to just get cut off. Problem is, the last few times this has happened, it will not reboot. The only way I can fix this is boot my main PC in debian mount the USB key an do a fsck to fix the filesystem. I think it said something about unclean prior to the fsck. Iby glalonde - Debian

Will try the rest tomorrow, it's too late now. Also I got 3 dockstars at 30/each so I can risk breaking the top port of one on a reversal attempt.by glalonde - Displays
Step 1 did not go too well, missing libs, then compile failed: (issued wget then tar ok then...) /home/glen/picFrame:apt-get install libgd2-xpm-dev Reading package lists... Moved from 8GB key to 40GB Drive: Created new drive with ubuntu(live cd) on main computer with partitions and desired size. used dd to copy just the data partition. sda1 for example. Need to set 'bootable' bit on partition. Once I booted, cfdisk showed proper size, but df showed old size. Needed to resize partition. Did so via resize2fs on ubuntu. Show sizes once you boot iby glalonde - Debian
I got the m_shift3.zip and a shilft3(with silver back), hmm, now what? If you can be so kind as to put some steps together I will try them, clean them up, post some pics(in focus) on my site. As always, proper attribute will be given back to anyone who assists. I want to get my general DockStar hacking guide up by year end, might be nice to also have the display hacking included. I tried it too, no luck. Does not work.by glalonde - Debian
I see the memory is the same, 128MB, but is the IO any faster via the sata connections vs USB? Can some person with a GoFlex Net and drive try this: Dec 2010 on USB, 40GB SATA, drive: root@debian:/etc# hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 576 MB in 2.01 seconds = 287.25 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 86 MB in 3.08 seconds = 27.89 MB/sec Above is via USBby glalonde - Debian
Got it resolved. This is what I did. 1. tried to boot again, seemed to fail. 2. mounted drive on main pc along with old USB stick. 3. USB stick did not have first partition set to 'bootable' but I just thought I would try that on the new drives' first partition. 4. Tried booting new drive, seemed to try once, then again, but on second boot it worked. Since then it seems ok.by glalonde - Debian
I'm currently running of a 8GB USB stick. I mounted the USB stick and a 40GB USB(SATA) drive on my main computer after rooting into ubuntu. Then I created 2 partitions(ext2 and swap) on the 40GB, did a dd to move the first partitions data from the USB stick to the 40GB drive's first partition. I tried to boot of the 40GB USB drive, but no luck. I did see the lights flash for drive aby glalonde - Debian
All devices are connected at gigabit at my place, at least the PC's dockstar, switches etc. Also I/O for processing itself will be faster. Does putting an SSD in a computer help? I think so...by glalonde - Debian
Reviews show the two drives have SATA connectors, thus you can much better speeds than we get from USB. Just need to hear if it's hackable, then wait for a sale. see pic http://www.techolive.com/2010/06/mini-review-seagate-goflex-net-media-sharing-deviceby glalonde - Debian

I wanted to update the list of places it looks for software distributions. Did a apt-get update distro, when I seen what it was doing I guess I should have stopped it. Downloaded a massive amount of stuff. I was thinking it was not going to boot but it did. My LCD program had issues after reboot, got claim failed with error -1 then I tried it as root: interface 0 already claimed by driveby glalonde - Debian

do the buttons work? Yes and no. They do work, but so far the call to read them seems to block, so it's better to just poll for it. Will see if I get the better version working. Will post article with source. Glen. www.binarysearchtree.com glalonde at gmail.comby glalonde - Debian
I had a 20x4 LCD display which I have not used in over a year, thought it might be a nice "status" display for the debian dock. Took some coding in c to get it working, but it now does work. See picture. Glen Lalonde. www.binarysearchtree.com glalonde at gmail.comby glalonde - Debian
General FYI on performance, installed to a 8GB Flash drive got: apt-get install hdparm hdparm -tT /dev/sda Timing buffered disk reads: 54 MB in 3.01 seconds = 17.93 MB/sec Timing cached reads: 536 MB in 2.00 seconds = 267.97 MB/sec I'm going to run my site off of it.by glalonde - Debian
hi Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Some routers seem to misbehave when the hostname > changes, but the mac stays the same or so. My router would not assign the same IP because of some strange way the MAC address was reported. So I just altered /etc/network/interfaces to assign a static ip.by glalonde - Debian

I had the same type of failure, I tried it again in about 30 minutes and it worked. Think it is an issue with the repository, see other posts about it.by glalonde - Debian
Hello all. I just did an install tonight, a few quick comments and a question. You really need to add a couple comments about doing the fdisk. I managed to get it done but it took almost 30 minutes since I have not run that command in many years and I forgot about how to create the swap space. Create partition then change the type. I had an issue with the first try, gave some kind of debby glalonde - Debian
