@mrc333777 I have two of these. Both show up as Apple devices (certainly not Apple!) This one was from Colgate. Other is from a reputable University. Again, they were sent as legitimate marketing material. > that maybe what they are just rubber ducky stuff. - I doubt it, it may be too expensive to mass mail Ducky. There is no storage. I have two fake USB drives /keys that essentially simulate HID keyboard and take you to a specific website. (legit Marketing but just like Hak5 rubber ducky). I do not need need those sites anymore. Is there a tool that can be used to repurpose these keys/sticks to take them to another site that I want? Or something else that may need a keyboard input?by metric - Off-Topic
Hi, I have dockstar and Goflex home with Bodhi's u-boot. Can I boot openwrt with OS on external usb without writing it on local flash? If yes, how?by metric - uBoot
@bodhi I followed your instruction, it still fails to boot from rescue. As I have a bootable system image and new uboot, I do not mind trying new rescue. Do you have any recommendations? The LEDE version looks good. @bodhi I am running systemd. BTW I have taken too much of your time trying to recover. So here is a new plan ;-) I had backed up the entire boot drive with Jessie on a desktop, so I re-imaged it back and will start upgrade from my Jessie version again. Any pointers to do it properly? Quotebodhi https://packages.debian.org/stretch/firmware-misc-nonfree The package is installed. I reinstalled it just in case. Did dpkg -a too. The file does exist on the drive, I confirmed it with mlocate. That is why I am confused. Why it says that the file cannot be found.by metric - Debian
Thanks Bodhi, Just because you complained... :-), I upgraded the U-Boot. For some reason the boot partition did not have rootfs label. I added that too. I know this is a hacked device to begin with, but I like to keep the kernel in sync with the distribution so that I can update with apt-get. I prefer not to use your kernel for that reason alone. But that is not working either. . I haveby metric - Debian

Hi Bodhi, The setup was working fine with Jessie. There is no change in the hardware. It is a stock kernel that came with the upgrade. @habibie - I have a working cable, the problem is with my board that did not come with the headers. I soldered them and did not do a good job :-( @bodhi - Netconsole worked. Success! Thank you. Just untarred the image to the fresh SD card reboot and Voila! it boots. Next step, making it boot from SATA port with wd red drive and make a real file server ;-). Old goflex home, It was running stable with a SATA drive. I made a mistake of installing archlinux, something went wrong, bricked the device. I have a dockstar running debian jessie that has some nice computer speakers conencted. (Same device that I use as a wall clock for gongs). Good to know the bad block is not in U-boot. I will update the uboot now. I understand that electronics can go bad any time but the same supposedly bad reader works fine in two different PCs, a desktop and a laptop. Just the dockstar has stopped reading it. Now I am suspecting that the there is some newly introduced low resistance in the reader circuit (not exactly a short but close to it,by metric - uBoot
I did the upgrade by changing apt sources. I followed your instructions to revert systemd back to init. But this could be a red herring. I used another CF card and did a brand new install (on a new CF card reader) using Jeff's script from http://projects.doozan.com/debian/kirkwood.debian-wheezy.sh This time I did not upgrade to Jessie. Bodhi, I did a brand new wheezy installation from rescue boot using Jeff's script to a working CF adapter. I have been using usb CF adapter (14cd:8168 Super Top) and a CF card as my boot drive for a long time on my dockstar (few years) . Recent upgrade to Jessie screwed up the audio so I shutdown the sysem to remove the hardware. The system was up 24x7 for months, just reboots for kernel updates but powered on. Now the U-Boot or the rescue system cannot see the usb adapter or the card. I cannot boby metric - uBoot
I suspect a dying power supply but wanted to make sure. My headless debian dockstar has started playing static through the speakers (attached to a USB sound card). @JohnW, the sound is not all that great, just my memories of that particular clock. You can find better samples on the web, just search for clock sound effects. I also saw the big ben somewhere. My parents have an old wind-up wall clock with a gong that strikes every hour. Last year I had recorded the sound of that clock. Yesterday when we changed the time in the US I decided to simulate that on my dockstar. I thought I will share this simple shell script with the nice folks on this forum. Don, I got a good deal from a surplus site for 2 GB industrial compact flash with built-in EDC/ECC, wear-leveling and block management from advantech. I am using that with CF usb reader as a EXT2 boot drive for DLNA/MPD renderer. I am relying on the hardware to keep my data and it has been running 24x7 for last three years. Thanks bodhi, The device is in a hard to reach place, connected via wi-fi playing music on gmrenderer-resurrect and MPD. So I cannot do netconsole. (Will it work with wifi?) Not sure where the problem lies but after recent kernel update my dockstar will not cold boot from USB HDD. It goes in to rescue, I issue reboot and then it boots from USB HDD. It also seems that it is unable to initialize my targus usb docking station (it has USB hub with powered ports, sound and VGA). What could be wrong? How do I debug?
