OLD POGO E02 update to debian
July 15, 2022 06:55AM
Hello everyone, I have an old Pogo E02 that was running Arch linux arm.
I connected to serial console and found Arch linux arm uboot installed:

Is it possible to install Debian with this uboot? I imagine the best scenario would be to update the latest uboot and install Debian,
could you tell me which steps to follow, please?
Thank you in advance.
Marco

I think this is what you are looking for:

Arch to Debian

Thank you Bluzfanmr1, unfortunately i have some problem to figure out what version of rootfs to choose and which steps i Need to install It on my USB drive. Can you please provide me a step to step explanation? Is my actual uboot compatible with the last image of rootfs? As you can see i miss some knowhow.
I have 3 pogo e02 and i succesfully ran ALArm, but i found only One procedure to install It on, and for a newbie like me It was fairly simple following step by step the procedure. Debian is quite difficult to install for me.
Thank you in advance for your patience.
Kind regards,
Marco

Marco,

You can use the latest rootfs: Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

1. Scroll down to section

Quote

Updated 26 Sept 2021:

Basic Debian bullseye Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

While in Arch Linux ARM, create the rootfs on another USB thumbdrive, following the instruction from Step 1 to 5.

2. To prepare the uEnv.txt to boot Debian, follow the instruction in this post:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,23727,23727#msg-23727

3. Shutdown the box, and unplug the Arch Linux ARM USB drive, power up. Watch serial console to see if it boots all the way to the Debian login prompt.

Please post the entire serial boot log if you see any problem, or it cannot boot to Debian.

debian login:
Pogo E02 was not connected with ethernet cable to internet.
After connecting the eth cable It doesn't appear on my lan.
I will try tomorrow to connect the serial cable and update the post, unfortunately in Italy is night and tomorrow I have to wake up early.
Thank you for now!

Re: OLD POGO E02 update to debian

Marco,

Congrats! the log looks good. You are very close.

Ethernet is OK, but looks like there is no cable connected. If you plug in the cable while the system is running, check dmesg:
dmesg | tail
If there is active link to the switch/router, it should show the link is up and the speed.

You also need to fix the rootfs. There was a mis-step you did during its creation.

Quote

4. (Stock u-boot only) Create uImage with embedded DTB for booting with older u-boots (2012 or earlier). Skip this step if you have installed the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood (or are installing this u-boot at the same time, or running kwboot with latest u-boot image).

Please replace kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb below with the correct DTB name for your box (see the folder /media/sdb1/boot/dts for the exact spelling of your Kirkwood box name).

Generate the uImage with DTB embedded inside:
cd /media/sdb1/boot
cp -a zImage-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 zImage.fdt
cat dts/kirkwood-goflexnet.dtb >> zImage.fdt
mv uImage uImage.orig
mkimage -A arm -O linux -T kernel -C none -a 0x00008000 -e 0x00008000 -n Linux-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1 -d zImage.fdt uImage
sync

Since this ALARM u-boot is a new u-boot (comparing to stock u-boot), that supports FDT, you must not do Step 4. So reverse this step.

Log into Debian, and

cd /boot
rm zImage.fdt
mv uImage.orig uImage
sync
Note that zImage.fdt is not relevant at all, but you should remove it so later you can tell quickly that the uImage does not have DTB appended. And vice versa.

And reboot.

Marco,

The Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 rootfs release notes:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096
Quote

Updated 26 Sept 2021:

Basic Debian bullseye Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 234M
- install size: 668M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see Notes below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, sysvinit-utils, u-boot-tools, and mtd-utils.
- see LED controls examples in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Important Correction:

After releasing this rootfs,

1. I realized I've missed one package that needs to be installed in order to make fw_printenv and fw_setenv available (these binaries have been moved to package libubootenv-tool in bullseye) . So do this if you want to list or set envs in Debian.
apt-get install libubootenv-tool

2. There was an obsolete source in /etc/apt/source.list. Please change the old security repo to
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free

So your /etc/apt/sources.list content should look like this:

~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free

deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security bullseye-security main contrib non-free

deb http://http.debian.net/debian bullseye-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.debian.net/debian bullseye-updates main contrib non-free

And also adjust this to your region

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian bullseye main contrib non-free

I'm Sorry, did not ready carefully and the problem Is now fixed.
I Need to automount an External hdd to my POGO and share contents on lan.
I mount It with no problem after the boot process is complete, but i Need to automount at boot using fstab. Is It normal that Everytime i reboot the device with this ext4 external hdd connected, the boot process stops and then i loose the SSH access?

No, it's not normal. Your fstab should have a device statement that ignore the drive if it cannot be mounted at that time. Use the syntax similar to this tempfs. Note the last options "0 0"

tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0

But you do not need to use fstab at all. See Wiki sticky thread:

I created the rule, copied and paste the code as it is but i think i'm missing sometring, because the boot process stops.
Do i need to modify the udev rule you posted with any info of my usb hdd?

No need to do any thing specific to the drive. As long as the drive has a partition label then it should work.

I created udev rule with this exact content:
# NOTE:
# 1. use pmount --sync if drive label ends with Sync/SYNC/sync in add action to allow removal without corruption
# 2. avoid mounting EFI partition for a HFS+ drive
# 3. force mount HFS+ partition as read-write
# 4. mount USB hardrive (which is identified as SSCI)

OK, this u-boot is a bit old. There is some problem with the envs logic in scanning USB drives. It has nothing to do with the udev rules (which only run after the kernel has booted).

Unplug the USB "hdd" drive. Boot only with the USB rootfs. Let it boot all the way into Debian. Log in.

mount
dmesg | tail

And then plug in the USB hdd drive.

dmesg | tail
mount

The above is to verify that the hdd drives is mounted by udev whenever it detects the drive present.

And then we come back here and see how to fix the problem with multiple USB drives during boot.

Read this post for the explanation of this typical problem and how I solved it in my released u-boot envs. But don't try to use the instruction, it does not apply to your installed u-boot.
