garagoyun,

Please try this new DTB.

Note that I've changed the name of the the DTS/DTB because apparently hnc-n2 is the model name. So we should name this box properly.

This version should have Power Off, 2 buttons (Power and Reset), and the hwmon device adt7473.

garagoyun,

Strange, It acts like there is no power on the NIC, or cable is not plugged in.

[ 8.843591] mv643xx_eth: MV-643xx 10/100/1000 ethernet driver version 1.4

What I am trying to do is avoid the ethaddr issue.

So we can see if the NIC is really activated first. How about using static IP, with hwaddr in it.

Something like this.

cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo eth0
iface lo inet loopback
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.0.224
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        gateway 192.168.0.1
        hwaddress ether 00:01:DB:1E:24:C2

I have adjusted above according to the information from my laptop:
~$ ip route | grep default
default via 192.168.1.254 dev wlp3s0 proto static metric 600

Eth0 is still not up though:

garagoyun,

There is a quirk in the NSA325 as far as the network chip 88E1318 is concerned, and I did not think it is applicable to this box. Perhaps it is.

I'll upload another DTS/DTB so to make it compatible to the NSA325 and see what'll happen.

Arhgh :) The "fix" did not get any effect I hope see. It was ignored.

Will look again tomorrow.

garagoyun,

One more test. This time I would like you to boot back with the NSA325 DTB embedded (instead of the new DTB), and plug in the ethernet cable before powering up. And the hwaddr needs to be hardcoded inside /etc/network/interfaces.

If the behavior is what I think it is (same quirk as NSA325), then network should be up. I don't recall you did this test.

And this is the network test only. Other aspects are not relevant (they might be wrong).

Re: Debian on Freecom Silverstore 2 NAS

bodhi,

I found I made a mistake in the MAC address. it should have been 00:01:DB:1E:24:F2 (instead of 00:01:DB:1E:24:C2).

But even after changing that, there is still no eth0.

The original kernel does activate the network without any problems, however. :(

Re: Debian on Freecom Silverstore 2 NAS
September 29, 2018 04:18PM
bodhi,

I had some spare time today to mess a bit with the device.

Relying on the information from https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Freecom_SilverStore I did research which other devices have the same ETH chip:
ETH chip1: Marvell 88F6282
ETH chip2: Marvell 88E1318
LAN speed: 10/100/1000
LAN ports: 1

Apparently, there are two other: Iomega StorCenter ix2-dl and Netgear ReadyNAS RND2000 v2 (Duo v2)

So I tried to boot with the DTB for the StoreCenter first. Eth0 did work this time, but there was still no internet connection.

Then I tried with the DTB for ReadyNAS. This time I was also able to connect to the internet. I am not sure if that information would be of any help. Just a note, with both DTB files there were a lot of "Bad eraseblock" warnings. I assume it could be because the other two devices have a bigger NAND flash memory. I am not sure.

Also, when I was looking through the GPL source, in the driver directory there two files e1000e-1.1.19 and r8168-8.020.00. Aren't those Intel and Realtek network drivers? What are they for?

Definitely. The GPL does not have any special patch about this network chip (unlike the NSA325 which has a patch to perform a special sequence). So I thought we only missing some info, that could be found by trial and error only. Good works :) let me take a look at that box DTS

This is OK. Those boxes have different NAND definition in the DTS.

Cool!

That did not ring any bell. Probably not applicable.

I'm glad we have progress on ethernet so you can upgrade the system and install packages. You can start testing Buttons, LEDs, sensor, and other aspects.

I will become very busy with real life works in the next few weeks.

I see, damn! they use different PHY register in this box and the ready NAS :)

No wonder it behave like there is no power into the NIC.

bodhi,

That new DBT works beautifully. The satisfaction of success haha. Thanks very much for your immense help! Really appreciated.

I'm glad we have progress on ethernet so you can upgrade the system and install packages. You can start testing Buttons, LEDs, sensor, and other aspects.

I will start messing with the system, adjusting the settings etc., however my ultimate goal is to be able to boot from a hard disk (and not USB flash) without the need for serial port. I have also concerns that the built-in function could trigger at some point and wipe the hard disk off to install its tailored OS. How do I prevent that? Would I need a new u-boot and errase the content of the NAND memory permenently?

Once again, thanks very much!

garagoyun,

Cool :) That has definitely made this box fully functional to the point we want it to be. The rest is icing on the cake.

1. The HDD rootfs is not difficult at all. What you need to do is just remove the HDD, back it up somewhere, and clone the rootfs from the USB to it. Or use a new HDD.

2. I will help write u-boot envs that you can set to boot from the new clone HDD rootfs. It should not be interferred by stock u-boot recovery. If it did, we will see what need to be done.

3. You probably are aware of this. To test buttons: esekeyd. To test sensor: lm-sensors.

4. There are a couple LEDs control to add to the DTS. I will do that when I have a few free minutes to do so.

That would be my next move. I will test on the spare 75GB I have. I do not need raid.

I will be glad not to use the serial port to boot from.

I was not aware of esekeyd. However, had a quick look and that's what I have ended with:
root@silverdebian:~# cat /etc/default/esekeyd
# Defaults for esekeyd initscript

# Start esekeyd on boot (set it to "true" to enable)
START_ESEKEYD=true

# Daemon options, at last config location must be present
DAEMON_OPTS=/etc/esekeyd.conf
root@silverdebian:~# cat /etc/esekeyd.conf
#POWER:/sbin/shutdown -h now
#RESTART:/sbin/shutdown -r now
#POWER:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "POWER button pushed"
#RESTART:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "RESTART button pushed"
#COPY:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "COPY Button pushed"

#KEY_116:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "POWER button pushed"
KEY_116:/sbin/shutdown -h now
#KEY_408:system reset

root@silverdebian:~#

I have only two pressable buttons:
POWER button in front of the box, identified by /usr/bin/keytest as KEY_116
SYSTEM RESET pin at the back, as KEY_408, which is used to reset the whole system to initial state. Not much use of it for me to be honest.

I am happy with the result, was wondering however if it is possible to have longer press POWER button to initiate shutdown?

Regarding the lm-sensors; that and fancontrol were the first packages I downloaded straightaway. The fan noise was driving me mad :D

root@silverdebian:~# cat /etc/fancontrol
# Configuration file generated by pwmconfig, changes will be lost
INTERVAL=10

MINSTART=hwmon1/device/pwm1=150
MINSTOP=hwmon1/device/pwm1=0
MAXPWM=hwmon1/device/pwm1=150
root@silverdebian:~#

Extremely silent now. the fan is audible only during boot.

Those are not crucial for me. When and if you have free minutes to look into, it would be appreciated.

One thing that is puzzling me is why the CPU is downclocked to 1000MHz:
root@silverdebian:~# lscpu | grep MHz
CPU max MHz: 1000.0000
CPU min MHz: 0.0000
root@silverdebian:~#

Is there any restriction caused by the rest of the hardware? If not would it be safe to bring it back to its 1600MHz?

Did you test both buttons with

One thing that is puzzling me is why the CPU is downclocked to 1000MHz:

I configured this kernel to have CPU frequency governor. See if it was set to a lower setting by default.

Install cpufrequtils, and

Strange! now that I thought about it, even with governor it should have shown the max higher.

CPU max MHz: 1000.0000
CPU min MHz: 0.0000

Did you test both buttons with

POWER:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "POWER button pushed"
RESTART:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "RESTART button pushed"

Those commands are not triggered when I press the buttons. Nothing in the syslog.

I need to replace POWER and RESTART with KEY_116 and KEY_408 respectively. Which results in the following output:
root@silverdebian:~# tail -f -n 5 /var/log/syslog
Oct 1 08:05:01 silverdebian ntpd[1778]: Listening on routing socket on fd #23 for interface updates
Oct 1 08:05:02 silverdebian avahi-daemon[1703]: Server startup complete. Host name is silverdebian.local. Local service cookie is 1584089082.
Oct 1 08:06:04 silverdebian root[2000]: RESTART button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:23 silverdebian root[2002]: POWER button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:42 silverdebian root[2004]: POWER button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:42 silverdebian root[2006]: POWER button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:43 silverdebian root[2008]: POWER button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:45 silverdebian root[2010]: RESTART button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:46 silverdebian root[2012]: RESTART button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:46 silverdebian root[2014]: RESTART button pushed
Oct 1 08:06:46 silverdebian root[2016]: RESTART button pushed

So I have adjusted the commands as below:
#KEY_116:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "POWER button pushed"
KEY_116:/sbin/shutdown -h now
#KEY_408:/usr/bin/logger -s -i "RESTART button pushed"
KEY_408:/sbin/shutdown -r now

and shutting down and restarting the NAS via the buttons work. But as I mentioned the button at the back of the NAS could be pressed only with a pin, so it is not very practical.

I am happy however to have only power off button. I should not be using that button much anyway :)

Great test! I'm aware that esekeyd seems to have problem in previous kernel/Debian versions. Your test has given me some idea to track it down in the kernel source to see if it's really the kernel fault.

> available frequency steps: 1000 MHz, 0 kHz

That's reasonable, since u-boot set the frequency to 1000 MHz. I think it is either they have falsely advertised the box CPU as 1.6Ghz, or they just flashed the wrong u-boot version and never fixed it. This is not easy to fix software-wise without rebuilding u-boot.

This new DTB has LEDs control. System Status and Power LEDs.

After booted into Debian

ls -l /sys/class/leds/

Test
echo none > /sys/class/leds/hncn2:green:sys/trigger
echo default-on > /sys/class/leds/hncn2:green:sys/trigger

echo none > /sys/class/leds/hncn2:green:power/trigger
echo default-on > /sys/class/leds/hncn2:green:power/trigger

Removed the post. The faults were due to "blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 3715408".

3 usb stick memories failed until now.

bodhi,

I assume I would need the latest U-Boot for Kirkwood if I want to use Ext4?

Also, currently I am executing the following setenv commands via serial port at every boot. How do I make those permananet in uboot? Using fw_setenv?
setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:0x000a0000@0x0(uboot),0x00040000@0x000a0000(param),0x00280000@0x000e0000(preroot),0x00380000@0x00360000(uimage),0x076e0000@0x006e0000(rootfs),0x00240000@0x07dc0000(misc),128m@0x0(flash)'
setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd_exec 'run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
run bootcmd_exec

No, no with fw_setenv. Right now you have to a saveenv in serial console to make it permanent. But the bootcmd needs to be modified to make it boot automatically. So the whole set to boot usb, and then fallback to stock kernel in NAND is

setenv mtdparts 'mtdparts=orion_nand:0x000a0000@0x0(uboot),0x00040000@0x000a0000(param),0x00280000@0x000e0000(preroot),0x00380000@0x00360000(uimage),0x076e0000@0x006e0000(rootfs),0x00240000@0x07dc0000(misc),128m@0x0(flash)'
setenv set_bootargs 'setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 ${mtdparts} earlyprintk=serial'
setenv bootcmd_usb 'usb start; ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /boot/uImage; ext2load usb 0:1 0x2100000 /boot/uInitrd'
setenv bootcmd_exec 'run set_bootargs; run bootcmd_usb; bootm 0x800000 0x2100000'
setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_exec; nand reset; nand read.e 0x800000 0x00100000 0x00199800; check_crc32 PrEr; nand reset; nand read.e 0x40000 0x00380000 0x0027d400; check_crc32 KrNl; setenv bootargs $(console) $(bootargs_root); bootm 0x40000'
boot

Run these a few times in serial console to make sure it work . And then after you are certain that everything is working as expected, do a save as the last command before boot

saveenv
boot

garagoyun,

Boot back to stock OS, and

which blparam

If that did not find blparam, then search for it
cd /
find . -name '*blparam*'

The output is not from the device I am testing, as I have wiped the hard disk on it. Anyway there is no output for the commands:
~ # which blparam
~ # cd /
/ # find . -name '*blparam*'
/ #
