Trying again to unbrick my stora MS2110
July 26, 2021 10:14PM
Hello Bodhi and friends!

I still have this Netgear Stora with a corrupt environment partition. I did discover that it is able to load files from an ext3 formatted drive with ext2load command, and list file contents with ext2ls command.

I appear to be on original/stock uboot. I have been successful in loading the new uboot image to address 0x800000 . My question is: do you suppose there is a way to chainload that kernel in such a way that I coud boot from a rootfs USB drive? I have created the drive, along with the uEnv file, and copied the new uboot image and environment images to the root of the drive. Nand erase and nand write commands appear to function properly, but I am hesitant to test that aspect too much. I believe the stock Pogoplug OS is hosed also, but I don't recall - it's just been too long since I last worked on it.

Also, kwboot doesn't work on this model - bootrom is too old. Also, unfortunately, there aren't any jtag connectors onboard. Not even an unpopulated header. There is simply no jtag functionality available. Just a 4-pin header for the serial port with Ground, rx, tx and v+ . (Yes, I keep v+ unplugged when interfacing with it).

Anything else I can try?

Update: It appears I was off on one item - there is jtag capability. Using the testpoints (tp# 2,3,4,5,&7) on the board.

aaronouthier,

If you know JTAG is working, then you should flash the new u-boot (uboot.2017.07-tld-1.netgear_ms2110.mtd0.kwb) in serial console.

Jtag should work, but It'll be a hassle to accomplish. I've never soldered before, and I would need to solder 5 separate wires to 5 separate spots. I have a friend who could do it, but he's a good 8 miles away, and I don't have a car. All-in-all, it is definitely doable, but for me, it'll be difficult at best. That's why I'm looking for other options.

I forgot, is your serial console working as a normal serial console would? I recal that you cannot kwboot.

Serial console works fine.
Re: Trying again to unbrick my stora MS2110

I tried the following excerpt from Stormy's thread:

usb reset
ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /u-boot_mtd0
go 0x800200

However, it said no storage devices, after the first entry. However, if I skip the first line, the new uboot file loads into memory. Although the go line appears to execute at first, it was clear that it actually hangs after sitting there for 20 minutes. Of course, I didn't use the exact 2nd line - I changed /u-boot.mtd to the name of the new uboot file.

Do you suppose it would be possible to load the environment image to a temporary memory address, and then nand write it to the correct place? I hope this would correct the overflow errors. If so, where is a "safe" place to load 128k of arbitrary data?

I'm not surprised. Chainload wil not work from stock u-boot to a new u-boot such as 2017.07.

==========

The problem is that the envs are corrupted in a really bad way, so there is no way to load u-boot image through tftp. And this particular Stora box does not UART booting with kwboot!

If you can find a Stora u-boot that is older than one on the box, that might not have the bug. This bug caused the corruption to the envs area in a way that you cannot erase it (catch-22, in order to erase it in serial console, some envs need to be set correctly.).

To chainload successfully, the u-boot image being loaded must be very close to the current running u-boot in memory. Meaning the memory footprint must be very close to the same, and the way registers are defined must be exactly the same.

The only exception to these rules above is if the u-boot image being loaded is very old (old u-boot architecture allows chainload, but not the recent u-boot architecture).

It's my MS2110 and start uboot 3.4.16 from sheevaplug my env in NAND corrupt.

AMD,

Cool!

Marvell>> fatload usb 0:1 0xf00000 /uboot.bin
reading /uboot.bin

IMO, this is very best way to recover the Stora from this bug! it is possible to chainload because uboot.bin and the buggy u-boot in NAND are almost identical.

Please upload this uboot.bin (attach it to your post). I'll add this to the Wiki thread.

Awesome! I'll have to try this after the sun comes up.
@AMD, I'm a guy, not a gay. I realize this was a typo, but you might want to fix that - some might be offended.

Hi guy's!

I am sorry, my english very bad!

After NETGEAR disabled support for MS2110 at the end of the lifecycle, I had to modify my MS2110. Namely, I increased the amount of RAM to 512 MB and the amount of NAND flash to 1024 MB for this, I had to redo the Linux kernel bootloader and Linux kernel drivers to be able to install Debian and DSM 6.2.4. During the modification, I encountered the same problem and solved it. I have already posted Bodhi uboot above.

I also found that the standard MS2110 system works very slowly, so I had to increase the speed of the marwell processor from 1000 Mhz to 1500 Mhz and the RAM speed from 333 MHz to 500 Mhz after that, the system speed became acceptable for Debian.

Ok! So following AMD's instructions, I managed to write a basic, but working (default) environment. Uboot now completes. However, uimage and uinitd are corrupt now. I have the required files on my ext3 formatted USB stick. I think I forgot to label it rootfs, but that's an easy fix. I have the entire USB debian rootfs on the USB drive. @bodhi, etc. How would I go about loading and then flashing the required files to flash. Currently, only uboot and environment stuff seems to be working.

hi
First of all you should know stock mtdparts or Debian mtdparts

For examle

mtd0 0x0 0x100000 uboot
mtd1 0x100000 0x300000 kernel
.....

For examplу (linux kernel flashing, 0x200000 kernel size)

1) ext2load usb 0:1 0x800000 /zimage

2) nand erase 0x100000 0x200000

3) nand write.e 0x800000 0x100000 0x200000

Unfortunately, I don't know what mtdparts means.

Keep it entirely on USB rootfs or HDD rootfs to keep it simple.

The flash on this box is too small for a Debian rootfs. The only thing feasible to be on flash are the kernel files. But even then, there is really no compelling reason to do that.

Ok, so...
I don't understand how that helps me go from old uboot to being able to boot USB?

The instructions already presented assume the stock OS is present. Mine isn't, so I need help getting there solely from serial console and stock uboot.

Here is how to boot USB Debian rootfs from stock u-boot.

It is a general instruction that works with most Kirkwood boxes (ones that I don't have new u-boot released).

But for this box, you can install the new u-boot and it will boot Debian. Since this Stora model does not have UART booting (other Stora models do), there is some risk doing that.

First, you have to decide what you want. If you want to have a data storage system based on the Debian OMV4 build, then Bodhi will give you instructions on how to do it. Let's say I converted my MS2110 to DS213 and installed the syno DSM 6.2.4 data storage system, it does not require a large amount of flash memory. But the system speed will be low in both cases, it is necessary to increase the CPU speed and the amount of RAM.

Bodhi and AMD,

Thank you for your help. I plan to put Debian rootFS on initially, and then move to OpenWRT on my Stora and 2 Goflex Models. The CPU speed, RAM and storage is similar to what my Netgear R8000 has. I would prefer to have the USB ports open and available.

As far as file sharing, a simple NFS server will certainly suffice. Eventually I may add CIFS, but it's overkill now.

Sure. I would install Debian on USB initially anyway. Save that USB rootfs to be a "rescue" mechanism if and when you cannot boot OpenWrt on flash for whatever reason. The envs should be set up to boot both OpenWrt on flash and Debian on USB.

That was my thought as well. I have 3 Kirkwood devices, so if I could have just 1 rescue device for all 3, so much the better. The real trick will be not bricking any of them in the process.

Although I am a mid-level Linux user, I am a bit new to Embedded systems.

The process is to do it slowly and safely, if you are going to change u-boot envs.

1. Have a rescue mechanism such as UART booting (your Stora does not have this).
2. Never use the following commands during testing: saveenv, resetenv
3. Know if the current u-boot does not try to reflash FW if booting fails.

If you can do UART booting then it is almost unbrickable.
