PogoPlug V4 won't boot after failed env input
October 20, 2014 10:12AM
Hello everyone,

I was trying to do a reinstall of arch on my pogoplug when the power in the part of the house where the pogolpug was connected went down. My pogo didn't start correctly so I soldered a serial cable. I can see what is happening via putty. Could somebody please help me to get the pogoplug working again? I am not a very experienced user.

This is the installation log, in-till power went down:

devinger,

When you see the u-boot banner, and the countdown:

Interrupt u-boot, and set the envs (ethaddr is your MAC address)
Pogov4> setenv arcNumber 3960
Pogov4> setenv machid f78
Pogov4> setenv ethaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

then

Pogov4> boot

Looks like the bootcmd is also bad, should reset it to:

setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_usb; run bootcmd_mmc; run bootcmd_sata; reset'

And then

boot

Hi @devinger,

Sorry to hear you're having issues with hacking your Pogoplug. I'm the author of the tutorial and trying to figure out what went wrong with your setup.

@bodhi/anyone see anything obvious that would cause the "Cannot parse config file: Invalid argument"?

/tmp # /tmp/fw_setenv ethaddr "$(cat /sys/class/net/eth0/address)"
Cannot parse config file: Invalid argument

I assume the "config file" the error is referring to is the /etc/fw_env.config generated by the following echo command:

#setup fw_env.config
echo "/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000">/etc/fw_env.config

@devinger, was your Pogoplug new? Is the installation log your provided complete and accurate? Anything else you can add that might help explain what may have happened?

Really odd that you're also missing or have incorrect environment variables.

Great that you want to help!
I used your tutorial before and it worked with the same pogoplug :) after connecting my hdd caused the pogoplug to crash with arch I tried to reinstall the software. I did it once before (reinstalling everything) and it all went fine. The log is from when I restarted the pogo on the pogo os without a usb stick (it booted correctly thanks to your tutorial :) ) and did a reinstall. I just copy d everything and started to look for a solution on which the first step was soldering the cable
Re: PogoPlug V4 won't boot after failed env input
October 21, 2014 09:54PM
That doesn't really explain why you bootcmd is set wrong. The default uboot environment parameter image should have set it correctly.

"bootcmd=run boot_nand" should be "bootcmd=run bootcmd_usb; run bootcmd_mmc; run bootcmd_sata; reset"

See @bluechalk's post for the correct default uboot parameters - http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,18024

At any rate, let's move on and get you working. This should be an easy fix.

Theoretically, you should be able to apply the default uBoot Environment Parameters and then update the env parameters appropriately. Run the following from the Pogoplug OS and post the output/results.

#stop my.pogoplug.com service
killall hbwd

#download firmware utilities
cd /tmp
wget http://download.doozan.com/uboot/nanddump
wget http://download.doozan.com/uboot/nandwrite
wget http://download.doozan.com/uboot/flash_erase
wget http://download.doozan.com/uboot/fw_printenv

#make executable
chmod +x flash_erase fw_printenv nanddump nandwrite

#printenv and setenv are normally symbolic links
cp fw_printenv fw_setenv

#remount '/' as read/write
#by default the Pogoplug OS (internal flash) is read only
#skip if running from Debian/ALARM
mount -o remount,rw /

#setup fw_env.config
echo "/dev/mtd0 0xc0000 0x20000 0x20000">/etc/fw_env.config

#output current uboot environment parameters
/tmp/fw_printenv

#Download and Flash uBoot Environment Parameters

#download default uboot env settings and md5
wget http://download.qnology.com/pogoplug/v4/uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img.bodhi.tar
wget http://download.qnology.com/pogoplug/v4/uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img.bodhi.md5

#check md5 sum (output should match)
md5sum uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img.bodhi.tar
cat uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img.bodhi.md5

#extract uboot env settings
tar -xf uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img.bodhi.tar

#flash default uboot env setting
#BE EXTRA CAREFUL WITH THE NEXT TWO COMMANDS. NO TYPOS!
/tmp/flash_erase /dev/mtd0 0xc0000 1
/tmp/nandwrite -s 786432 /dev/mtd0 uboot.2014.07-tld-1.environment.img

#output current uboot parameters after applying default
/tmp/fw_printenv

#Update uBoot Environment Parameters

#SET MACADDRESS
/tmp/fw_setenv ethaddr "$(cat /sys/class/net/eth0/address)"

#double check the MAC Address matches with
#what is on the bottom of your Pogoplug

Re: PogoPlug V4 won't boot after failed env input

@devinger ,

Try:
Pogov4> setenv arcNumber 3960
Pogov4> setenv machid f78
Pogov4> setenv ethaddr 00:25:31:04:ED:6A
Pogov4> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_usb; run bootcmd_mmc; run bootcmd_sata; reset'
Pogov4> run bootcmd

And post the log of what happen after that here!

@grayman,

re:

Hard to say without knowing what devinger's Pogo enviroment looks like at that time.

Arch Linux 3.16.2-1-ARCH (ttyS0)

alarm login:

When I rebooted it got the same problem as before so I did the same input but added saveenv. It didn't help.
But at least Arch is booting :)

So I have three questions left.
1 How do I save this changes so the pogoplug automaticly reboots in arch?
2 How do I set the original pogo software when I am nut plugging in a usb device with the arch kernel?
3 My pogoplug gets a kernel crash when I insert my sagate hdd. I don't know if you can help me with that but I read somewhere I need to change UAS settings
fw_setenv usb_custom_params usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u

Do you know where I need to put insert this line/how to get it working?

Cool!

Strange that your boot cmd was disabled. What you did originally could not have affect this boot cmd. I will have to look at your envs listing again closely.

At the serial prompt, add it to the end of bootargs
setenv usb_custom_params 'usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u'
setenv set_bootargs_usb 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=$usb_root rootdelay=$rootdelay rootfstype=$rootfstype $mtdparts $usb_custom_param'

Re: PogoPlug V4 won't boot after failed env input

How and where do I enter it in bootargs? Directly in uboot or somewhere else because fw_setenv is not accepted as a command :)

The pogoplug now restarts correctly with boot and after waiting untill the countdown is finished. I didn't check it correctly

Thanks again for all the time and effort

I allready tried that:

U-Boot 2014.07-tld-1 (Jul 18 2014 - 00:59:45)
Pogoplug V4

SoC: Kirkwood 88F6192_A1

WARNING: Caches not enabled

MMC: kwsdio: 0
In: serial
Out: serial
Err: serial
Net: egiga0
Hit any key to stop autoboot: 0
Pogov4> setenv usb_custom_params 'usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u'
Pogov4> setenv set_bootargs_usb 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=$usb_root rootdelay=$rootdelay rootfstype=$rootfstype $mtdparts $usb_custom_param'
Pogov4> boot

After the boot I plug the device in and still get a kernel panic :(

I tried to use input the parameters. I am sure I did some input wrong but I don't know what. 192.168.178.22 is my pc, 192.168.178.24 is the pogoplug This is what I used:

devinger,

> 'usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u'

Are you sure the quirk name is correct?

And to verify that the kernel took is as a parameter, look at the beginning of dmesg for kernel command line.

You are right, it doesn't take it as a parameter:

[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),4M(uImage),32M(rootfs),-(data)

I got the device id like this:

[root@alarm ~]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0781:5571 SanDisk Corp. Cruzer Fit
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub

Instead of using $usb_customparams in set_bootargs_usb, put that quirk string in the env directly. See if it will take.

Re: PogoPlug V4 won't boot after failed env input

Not sure if I did it right, I tried this:

setenv set_bootargs_usb 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=$usb_root rootdelay=$rootdelay rootfstype=$rootfstype $mtdparts $usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u'

and got a few seconds after loading the system and plugging in the hdd the usual kernel panic.

But, the dmesg changes! :)
[ 0.000000] Kernel command line: console=ttyS0,115200 root=/dev/sda1 rootdelay=10 rootfstype=ext3 mtdparts=orion_nand:1M(u-boot),4M(uImage),32M(rootfs),-(data) -storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u

Almost certain I do something wrong with the input. I am very great full for the time you put in to me to help!

devinger,

Remove the $

Yeaaah I tought I tried it, but I made a typo so I did it again and.. I worked!

setenv set_bootargs_usb 'setenv bootargs console=$console root=$usb_root rootdelay=$rootdelay rootfstype=$rootfstype $mtdparts usb-storage.quirks=0x0bc2:0x3321:u'

Thank youu for all your patients and help! I can't say it enough!
I have a similar problem :(
