Pogoplug v4 not booting - Serial output

Pogoplug v4 not booting - Serial output
December 22, 2018 08:30AM
Hello, I am new to pogoplug and the first one I bought has never worked properly. I finally figured out I can use a serial connection to it to see what the problem is. But I can't seem to find any answer to uboot not working. I've attached the end of the serial output below, any help would be awesome. Thanks

brickman7713,

You are booting with stock OS. What is your goal? Do you want to install new Debian rootfs and u-boot? or just want to fix this problem and continue using stock?

I assume it is stock but it has never booted since I bought it. I don't really care what I do with it as long as I fix it, I will probably install debian eventually, but I don't care yet. Thanks for the response

brickman7713,

Power up, interrupt serial console at countdown, and

printenv
boot

Please post the entire serial console log (from the u-boot banner until the last line in your terminal session).

I will post the printenv output soon, but how do I copy the complete serial output? I can't scroll up on the terminal on ubuntu

Re: Pogoplug v4 not booting - Serial output
December 23, 2018 02:13AM
brickman7713,

It is working fine. Nothing is wrong with your box.

You know that free Pogoplug service has been discontinued? when you boot this box into the stock OS like this, it is working as intended.

Now, in the old days, when this box is supported by the manufacterer, you can visit the box own webpage, log in and enable SSH... do all that. But since this box been EOL, that is something you must do manually. And then use this box in your network as a NAS.

However, to use it as NAS (without Pogolug service), you should install new Debian system and U-Boot to maximize the capabilty of the hardware.

Ok thanks, can you tell me why I get a red light then and I can’t connect to it through the network at all? Or how to enable ssh via serial

Red LED light means the kernel did not set it to Green because of errors. In stock OS, this behavior could mean any type of error, including failing to phone home (Pogoplug service always try to connect to home server when system starts).

As you can guess, this stock topic is quite old :) so I lost the links to forum posts that show you how to set up SSH permanently in stock OS.

Basically you need to set up to run dropbear in stock so that SSH is enabled. Somewhere in the forum there should be posts discussing this topic.

I'll search in my notes to find the instruction.

Ok enbled SSH with this method https://www.reddit.com/r/pogoplug/comments/5m9sd6/pogoplug_is_dead/. Now I can follow the debian guide?

I guess not since I can't find the /boot directory
Re: Pogoplug v4 not booting - Serial output

brickman7713,

The Debian installation is to USB. So it has nothing to do with stock /boot. You would create the rootfs using Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (24 Jul 2017) following the instruction:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,12096

I's suggest read the first post, and then scrolldown to

Quote

Updated 24 Jul 2017:

Basic Debian stretch Kirkwood rootfs for most Kirwood plugs:

- tarball size: 188M
- install size: 488M
- The init system used in this rootfs is sysvinit . To boot with systemd, see note 2 below.
- Installed packages: nano, avahi, ntp, busybox-syslogd (log to RAM), htop, isc-dhcp-client, dialog, bzip2, nfs server/client, iperf, ethtool, sysvinit-core, sysvinit, and sysvinit-utils.
- see LED controls in /etc/rc.local, and /etc/init.d/halt
- see some useful aliases in /root/.profile
- root password: root

Download at Dropbox:

Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2

md5:

sha256:
4ed5714fdb123cdb40e973f3d0754e91cd199b75a9874018f2b5dc9cfa8ae8bb

You need to do a lot of reading to get familiar with the manual installation procedures of Debian rootf and u-boot first.

Correct. This is how you get to run a full Debian system with the latest kernel.

So I read through that and I'm still a little confused. Do I need to install debian on a USB myself before following that guide?

No. The rootfs Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 is a full Debian system, with LInux kernel 4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1 installed in it. All you need to do is to extract it to a USB drive as instructed.

From now on this USB drive is your system. Eventually, if you like to run your system with HDD, then clone this over to the HDD (instrucition for this is available here).

You were looking at the wrong section. Please reread the post above:

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?3,75329,75449#msg-75449

Basically, the rootfs Debian-4.12.1-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2 (dated 24 Jul 2017) is all you need to create (you tried to follow the kernel section of the post)
