Speaking of the NAND u-boot. . . I had an idea about all this early on: Since it was a hardware issue, and it worked in Android, maybe boot1 in NAND (vs. MMC SPL) could be the cause. Boot 1 is the Allwinner SPL for NAND. It initializes the hardware and loads u-boot on the NAND. Since the SPL is not used on a NAND boot it is a good possibility that the existing NAND u-boot multi-boot from a1by gnexus - Allwinner A10

Screw the SD card. I don't even bother with the SD anymore. . . Besides: mount /dev/nanda /mnt/misc cp u-boot.bin /mnt/misc/linux is much simpler to do! Edit: But you do need the NAND u-boot version (no patch yet for Mele 1.7).by gnexus - Allwinner A10

QuoteI know this is too soon to use any A10 with Linux for now. Then why is everybody doing it on a daily basis? The new Mele is just one device out of countless others that work with no issues. QuoteHello. Topic in this forum was created in July. Is there any results for placing rootfs on your hard drive? This thread is very old and out of date. . . It is now easily possible to boot from: NAND, SATA, USB, and NFS. . . . and of course MMC, and you do not even need to use an MMC card to do it if you install the NAND u-boot to the Android boot partition. Great news! Looks like Hipboi may have managed to save his Mele business. . . ;) Looks like our posts got crossed somehow. Mine should have been above yours. I will also try to patch u-boot-multi with the above patch. It needs an Linux on NAND patch anyway. So that way I can kill two items before pushing out a new version. I already did a benchmark comparison of Kirkwood (GoFlex/Dockstar) vs. A10. It basically confirms your assumptions on the speed of A10 vs. Kirkwood. Thanks for the Raspi results, though. It would also be nice if somebody also ran lmbench on the 'pi, just to reconfirm that it is really a slow dog. . . I should try running lmbench on my N800. QuoteBut the linux hacking experience is much worse than either dockstar or RPi That is why this forum, and also http://a10linux.org, was created. I'm very busy and will be gone for the weekend. So there is no way for me to post the ICS script.bin until next week. Don't you already have the Android ICS on your Mele to pull the script.bin from? Would you be good enough to try an SD image, or manually made SD with the u-boot from http://a10linux.org, and let me know if that works. If there is a problem with the existing Mele script.bin on the new Mele's it needs to be confirmed so we can get a new one posted for people to use. The post at the top of this thread is a bit outdated, although still relevant. It was probably one of the first, if not THE first, post that was made to this forum. When the post was made there was very little information about the A13, and very few devices which had it - consisting only of cheap tablets. The A13 did not then work with GNU/Linux. So there was not a need to post anything about it.by gnexus - Allwinner A10
I copied the script.bin from the Mele Android 4.0 to my Linux /boot partition. Thus I replaced the existing script.bin which came from here: https://github.com/amery/sunxi-bin-archive/blob/master/mele-a1000/stock-nanda/script.bin It appears that script.bin has issues. . . It thus also appears that the SATA problems with certain drives is a non-issue. Works fine for me now!by gnexus - Allwinner A10

I don't want to criticize anybody's hardware choices. Each device, even a Raspi, has its good points and might be optimal for a particular usage scenario. Fedora has a lot of unneeded dependencies. That is my biggest complaint. A good example is the modem-manager package. It is a Network-manager dependency. It can be removed in Debian, but not in Fedora. Another good example is the kernel package. I always build my own kernel, but fedora still makes me install a huge kernel package and the headers too. I've been complaining about SATA resets down to 1.5 Gbps ever since I got my Mele. I assumed it was a driver issue. But I am reluctant to pin it on that alone. I have not yet tried plugging a straight cable in and bypassing the Mele socket. Until I do that I can't blame it on a driver issue. Plugging the cable in is easy enough. I have it working also. Took a bit of work. But it runs a bit better than Debian and boots and shuts down way faster. The advantage (and drawback) of Fedora is it always uses bleeding-edge packages and new stuff.
