I put a new disk and no raid array.
Maybe i need to upload another file with tftp to make the new disk bootable... Like when you buy the nas, you put disk and it ask you to install DSM on the disk.

Billy,

We went through this excercise before, somewhere in this thread. You can run kwboot and boot into Debian rootfs on USB.

Hi Bodhi,

Thanks for your answer

I would like to try to reboot on DSM to find all informations that we need to detect disks for example. But can't boot normally.

i'll try what you said if i can't manage to boot on DSM.
Re: Debian on Synology DS413J

Billy,

Reminder: if you have the mtd0 backup for this box, you can kwboot with the NSA325 u-boot (or the mtd0 backup file itself), and then flash the mtd0 backup in Debian. Also you can flash it in serial console (I can't recall if I've shown you how in this thread).

Hi Bodhi,

I'll try by myself to not disturb you. My problem was that i didn't have the prompt, i had my nas reboot everytime without possibility to stop it with ctrl+c or anything.

today, i have a Marvell>> prompt

My goal is to go on DSM and then we will discuss to find everything we need to detect all disks and redo our debian with all informations.

Hi Bodhi,

I'm back and if you can help, we could possibly make it work totally because.... I bought the exact copy to have a reference.

So, just ask me anything on the original DSM via SSH and i can give you information.

Let's go reverse it if you can

So on the bad box you have serial console prompt now?

Now you have bought another DS413j, have you connected serial console on this box?

=======

On the bad box, power up, interrupt the countdown, and at the u-boot prompt,

printenv
Do the same on the good box,
printenv

And then use setenv to adjust the envs on the bad box to have exactly the same as the envs on the good one.

On the Synology the pinout should be:

2 GND
4 TX
6 RX

So try swapping the TX and RX wires.

Hi Bodhi,

I'll try to debug this uart connection because it's not working. I did that before my work so i hadn't time to proper try things. Let me try to do it this week-end.
I'll update with the information you need as soon as i have serial connection to old and new DS413j
Thanks.

Hi Bodhi,

I can't have a serial console connection.

When the nas is off. I measured voltage between Ground and TX: about 1.5 V
I measured the other pin and GND : about 3.3v

Maybe my usb to ttl is faulty ?

Not sure. If you can, try connecting to a different board (such as rPi).

Hi Bodhi,

I tried with the same usb to ttl but with a raspberry pi like. No errors, nothing come up. The nas is power up, blue led blinking.

I'll try another usb to TTL on the old nas and i'll try to do the same on the new nas (i didn't try but i will)

If it's not working, i'll follow a course that i bought to learn hacking iot, i'll try logic analyzer on it :D

Then your converter is faulty. If you buy cheap converter from eBay, like I usually do, sometime you'll get a bad one.

I hope that the box is not broken completely :)

Re: Debian on Synology DS413J

I use a RPi with direct connection on the GPIO pins using 3 wires (Tx, Rx, Gnd), and have had absolutely no problems with it. This has worked to connect to multiple devices with no errors. You lose Bluetooth I think, but that's a minor issue for me since I don't need that on this Pi. It's a Model B Rev 2, and is perfect for the task. Took it out of a drawer, and has found its purpose in life as a serial connection interface accessible via ssh. Works a charm!
