Billy,

It looks very good. We lost 2 HDDs, but all 4 were detected properly before that.

My disk1 id detected as sdD this times and disk2 as sdE.

Strange, that could mean the first 2 slots are PCIe bus, and last 2 slots are internal SATA. But usually that's not the case.

The GPIOs might have been taken by other peripherals. So I think I know what I was lacking or what was wrong.

I will write the next commands.

It's the same test with USB rootfs and 4 HDDs in the slots. And the latest uEnv.txt on the USB rootfs /boot.

kwboot with the NSA325 uboot image. Interrupt the countdown. And,

MPPs

GPIOs
mw.l 0xF1010100 0x40008000

See if the 2 internal SATA HDDs can be seen by u-boot.
usb start
ide reset

And then
boot

Billy,

Put everything inside uEnv.txt, so you don't have to type in the commands. Note that the last 2 envs are very long. But I'd expect you will be able to do select/copy/paste to a text file OK.

cat /boot/uEnv.txt
ipaddr=192.168.10.200
serverip=192.168.10.161
netmask=255.255.255.0
gatewayip=192.168.10.1
mtdparts=mtdparts=spi0.0:1M(u-boot),-(data)
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-ds413j.dtb
ethaddr=52:3b:20:xx:xx:xx
gpio_config=mw.l 0xF1010000 01002222; mw.l 0xF1010004 03303311; mw.l 0xF1010008 00000000; mw.l 0xF101000C 00000000; mw.l 0xF1010010 00000000; mw.l 0xF1010014 00000000; mw.l 0xF1010018 00000000; mw.l 0xF101001C 00000000; sleep 3; mw.l 0xF1010100 0x40008000; mw.l 0xF1010140 0x00003AA4; sleep 3
scan_disk=run gpio_config; echo running scan_disk ...; scan_done=0; setenv scan_usb "usb reset; sleep 1; usb reset"; setenv scan_sata "sata init"; setenv scan_mmc "mmc rescan"; for dev in $devices; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo Scan device $dev; run scan_$dev; for disknum in $disks; do if test $scan_done -eq 0; then echo device $dev $disknum:1; if load $dev $disknum:1 $load_uimage_addr /boot/uImage 1; then scan_done=1; echo Found bootable drive on $dev $disknum; setenv device $disknum:1; setenv bootdev $dev; fi; fi; done; fi; done

Run the same test with USB rootfs and 4 HDDs in the slots. And the latest uEnv.txt on the USB rootfs /boot.

kwboot with the NSA325 uboot image. Interrupt the countdown. And,

This loads and imports the envs from uEnv.txt, without booting,
run bootcmd_uenv
And then list the envs to check if the envs were populated correctly,
printenv
Copy the envs listing to some notepad for keepsake. And then boot
boot

Billy,

I've released new Kirkwood kernel with this box initial supports.

Updated 23 Mar 2023:
Kernel linux-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1 package has been uploaded. The following features were added/updated:

You should intstall it on your USB rootfs. And since you are booting with the NSA325 u-boot-207.07, it is a new u-boot..

4a. Boot with DTB file (standard way to boot FDT kernel). Recommended.

Billy,

You had a typo. These are kernel files 6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1 after you extract the tarball.

No, you can not do that on another system. dpkg -i is the Debian install command that extract the Linux kernel and install several parts in the host system.

I might have had a typo or something.

Restore back to the previous uEnv.txt.

BTW, you need to replace the xx:xx:xx in ethaddr with real numbers.

cat /boot/uEnv.txt
ipaddr=192.168.10.200
serverip=192.168.10.161
netmask=255.255.255.0
gatewayip=192.168.10.1
mtdparts=mtdparts=spi0.0:1M(u-boot),-(data)
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-ds413j.dtb
ethaddr=52:3b:20:xx:xx:xx

Boot again. And install new kernel.

I saw the problem with mac address after the boot with the error :) stupid copy/pass; I'll try that tomorrow.
Thanks

OK so after you've installed the new kernel. Down load the new DTB file and copy it to /boot/dts.

The DTS file is also attached, for reference.

Hi Bodhi,

Sorry, i need to make it again all because i wasn't on this project for a while.
If we can resume to make me do it easy :
i'll recreate a new usb with last kernel and the last DTB you gave me (no need to embedded it to uImage or whatever)
Recreate the uEnv.txt with latest version

Do the same on the first disk

and boot with the nsa u-boot, stop and find last commands which was given to test

I'm correct ? Thanks

Biily,

Don't worry about new kernel.

1. Create the USB rootfs with Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

2. Copy the latest DTB in this post above

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,132369,134425#msg-134425

to the USB /boot/dts folder

3. Create the uEnv.txt

cat /boot/uEnv.txt
ipaddr=192.168.10.200
serverip=192.168.10.161
netmask=255.255.255.0
gatewayip=192.168.10.1
mtdparts=mtdparts=spi0.0:1M(u-boot),-(data)
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-ds413j.dtb
ethaddr=52:3b:20:xx:xx:xx

4. Attach the USB rootfs to the ds413j. And put all 4 HDDs in to the slots

5. Run kwboot
kwboot  -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb -p

6. Power up the ds413j. Just let it boot automatically all the way to Debian.

7. Log in and verify that 4 HDDs are initialized.

lsblk
df -h

This tarball contains 6 files:
linux-image-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1_1.0_armel.deb
linux-headers-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1_1.0_armel.deb
config-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1
zImage-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1
linux-dtb-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1.tar
linux-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1.patch

On another Linux box, as rootf, extract the kirkwood-ds413j.dtb from linux-dtb-6.2.7-kirkwood-tld-1.tar, copy it to the USB rootfs /boot/dts folder.

And then do the same test as above starting at Step 4.

Quote

1. Create the USB rootfs with Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2.

2. Copy the latest DTB in this post above

https://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,132369,134425#msg-134425

to the USB /boot/dts folder

3. Create the uEnv.txt

cat /boot/uEnv.txt
ipaddr=192.168.10.200
serverip=192.168.10.161
netmask=255.255.255.0
gatewayip=192.168.10.1
mtdparts=mtdparts=spi0.0:1M(u-boot),-(data)
set_bootargs=setenv bootargs console=ttyS0,115200 root=LABEL=rootfs rootdelay=10 $mtdparts earlyprintk=serial
dtb_file=/boot/dts/kirkwood-ds413j.dtb
ethaddr=52:3b:20:xx:xx:xx

7. Log in and verify that 4 HDDs are initialized.

lsblk
df -h

Hi Bodhi,

Just took the DTB on the page 4 and boot again (it boot and that make me happy because last boots were failing)

root@Arc-170:~/tools# kwboot  -t -B 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0 -b uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb -p

Billy,

Now install the new kernel on USB rootfs.

After that you can set up to boot from the rootfs on the HDD here:

sdd         8:48   0 931.5G  0 disk
|-sdd1      8:49   0   100G  0 part /
`-sdd2      8:50   0 831.5G  0 part

The HDD rootfs can be prepared at the command line. If you already untar the rootfs to /dev/sdd1 then we'll just need to check a few things before testing.

Billy,

Now it's time to explain it a bit more.

The rootfs you are booting with (Debian-5.13.6-kirkwood-tld-1-rootfs-bodhi.tar.bz2) is a very basic rootfs. It is barebone, and a learning verhicle. It is not a heavy rootfs like Ubuntu, Mint, etc. My intention is to provide a minimal rootfs for exerienced users so they can add whatever they already know they need. For inexperienced users, it is a vehicle to learn Linux.

So to see all your HDDs in Linux, you would need to either one of the below 3 approaches (there is another 4th approach that I think is redundant).

1. mount them manually. For example

mkdir -p /media/sde3
mount /dev/sde3 /media/sde3
And list the mount points
mount
You should see /media/sde3.

And df -h will show /media/sde3 and its capacity.

2. Label the disk partition to something unique. And use this automount tutorial to set up so that they will be mounted automatically:

Wiki thread
Quote

udev

Automount USB drives with udev rules using disk label

3. Add the mount points to /etc/fstab.

I don't recommend this approach. It is not very flexible.

i know some linux basic

in /etc/fstab (on your linux kernel) you have the label rootfs that automount on /
as my usb key and my "sdd1" has this label rootfs, it mount automatically.

When i boot with usb, it boot all to the prompt and it's sdd1 that is mounted at /

When i try the same without usb, it doesn't find any boot device... maybe something about ide reset not working to find my disks.

I know you know :) please do no take offense. When I post something, I'm thinking of all audiences, beginner or experienced, who are reading the post. So I always describe the fundementals, very basic stuff, but it is for the benefit of all readers. We are not talking to each other only.

Please post the serial boot log for HDD booting.

Perhaps something I missed in the envs that needs further adjustment in u-boot.

Ok, no problem :)

i put all the serial logs from hdd boot previously

the problem for me is that :

Reset IDE: ide_preinit failed

i'm trying to find a way to help you/me to find the problems with the dts/dtb/dto or anything that peek/poke hdds

there is errors when i boot with hdds and usb that said that 2 disks are failing from gpio already in use.

i'm trying to understand how/why

on the last lines of my hdd boot.... there is something that jump in my eyes, it tried to boot kirkwood-nsa325.dtb ? or is it the default from the u-boot ?

i talked about the ide reset not showing anything except error.
1. Adjusting some of the timings in drivers/block/mvsata_ide.c has allowed
me to apparently solve a _small_ fraction of the problem. I can now get it
to consistently/reliably honor the 'ide reset' command. (before this
timing adjustment, I would frequently see:
..................................
Pogov4> ide reset

Reset IDE: ide_preinit failed
``````````````````````````````````
solutions maybe :
To adjust timings in the drivers/block/mvsata_ide.c file in U-Boot, you will need to follow these steps:
First, you need to have the U-Boot source code available on your development machine.
Open the drivers/block/mvsata_ide.c file in your preferred text editor.
Look for the section of code where the timings are defined. This could be in the form of constants or variables.
Modify the values of these timings as required to achieve the desired behavior.
Save the modified file and rebuild U-Boot. This will depend on your specific development environment and toolchain.
Flash the new U-Boot image to your target device and test the changes.
Your error is you are missing a space between bootm and the 0x800000 address.
Ray
Re: Debian on Synology DS413J
@Ray,
Quote
Your error is you are missing a space between bootm and the 0x800000 address.
It is a known typo in internal envs. Normally, if one installed u-boot image and the default envs, that error would never show up. In this case, kwboot the NSA325 u-boot on another box will result in the CRC error in default envs (it was not flashed), and other problem occured so it felt back to the internal envs. So it is not a real problem.
@Billy,
** Bad device usb 0 **
That's the real error. Post the entire serial boot log, it's easier for me to explain what happened. Reminder: the testing rule is that you should post the entire log, don't post excerpt.
I did post all the logs from the flash of u-boot to the problem that i goes to stock u-boot
i tried without usb, only with all hdds.
The sdd is done as i did with usb with kirkwood 5.x.x. I just copy usb /boot to hdd /boot to have the uEnv.txt from usb and last DTB for ds413j
Billy,
That error is a typo in my inernal envs for uboot.2017.07-tld-1.nsa325.mtd0.kwb.
Ok from now on, you should boot with USB rootfs using kwboot. And the HDDs are for data only. Until I can figure out the conflicts in the 2 HDDs, I think we should stop testing for a while.
From time to time, I will post an updated DTB for testing.
