Right now I'm putting a movie and ISO on another USB stick that will be copied to the newly-formatted Ext4 one using the ThinClient booting CinnoMint. One sec :-)

-update- No, taking the Ext4 USB stick back to the ThinClient running CinnoMint, after formatting it there an hour earlier wasn't enough permissions to copy an iso and movie over to the stick.

OK. So it does not look like it's working.

I guess I will need to set it up and see for myself if I got the same behavior!

Ok, so it has nothing to do with the Pogo then :)

Try to get it work on Mint. If you can copy something to it while in Mint, then take the stick back to the Pogo!

Mint (at least the Live USB CinnoMint) wouldn't get past root permissions, even right after formatting and trying to copy over. Then I tried to make it a share and have permissions overwritten and that didn't work either. I'd think SanDisk Ultra was read-only if it weren't for Mint formatting it. Even Pogo couldn't write anything that I've seen so far.
My main Windows machine - which will be a few more days in maintenance mode - has a particular Linux driver that can copy to Ext2 and maybe Ext3 drives but not Ext4. So lacking other options I can try that soon.

I was going to ask if it's all the same if I were to format Ext2, which I haven't tried, but I suppose Ext2 uses more RAM because it's not Journaled?
Another thing, my neighbor says I can have their laptop's old hard drive, which might have enough life in it to plug into a USB 3 adapter and try that soon as well.

Do you think there maybe built-in protections in Pogoplug's SOC hardware to prevent that mpcie from writing? Or something isn't letting what's plugged-in write.

Also I have another Pogo Pro for last resort testing, and it isn't last resort yet LOL No really I have no room for more mess. I do this in a different room and have to plug in the SanDisk every boot up :-)

You don't need root for this USB drive. It is for testing pupose, so data is good enough.

Use the Mint menu (just like in Windows Start menu). Go to the Acessories submenu and format it as Ext2 or Ext4, does not matter. After you've formatted it, use the mouse/touchpad right button to eject (or safely remove) it. That way you can be sure that it was synched.

I'll list it :-)
1. I insert SanDisk USB 3 stick
2. Tell G-Parted to format to Ext3 and give it label
3. Unmount the stick so GParted can do it's job.
4. GParted finishes and I mount the drive again, newly formatted
5. I have another USB stick with an ISO and movie, to copy to the SanDisk USB stick, to try reading over LAN once this is re-mounted in Pogoplug.
6. Error says no, you need owner's permission to write to this stick (Sandisk)!
7. I check permissions and it's root and read only basically.

My longshot guess is that Live Mint doesn't allow the kind of permissions it might if this were installed on a hard drive.

* what does sync do then?

** bedtime ;-/

Joey,

Are you running Cinamon desktop on Mint? if not can you switch to that?

And I'm not talking about Live. I meant do you have Mint with Cinamon Desktop on any of your laptop(s) or Thin Client(s)?

Right now I have no Mints installed on hard drives, I was using live USB sticks. For the next few days I'll be wrapping up maintenance on a few computers and should have a spare hard drive after that.

It's a good idea! Live USB is good enough, but you're not runing the same system I'm running (Mint 18.x Cinamon) so it is a little hard for you to recognize right away what I posted (I assumed you did).

Yeah, anything Mint on live USB here is 18.1, favorite being XFCE (not nearby ATM though) as long as video hardware acceleration is available.
Soooo... Neighbor donated hard drive I'd replaced, it's on its last leg maybe, a Toshiba 2.5" with a USB 3.0 adapter cap on it. I formatted that Ext3, installed Ext2IFS_1_12 which allows me to copy files from Windows to Ext2 and 3. I'll have this hopefully mounted in the setup within an hour. See if it reads over LAN. Doubt it, but you never know...

I dunno bodhi, it might be time to put the Pogo 3 back together and find some other way to serve external hard drives over Gigabit LAN. And donate my Pogo3s to some prisoner who could use a project for the next 20-to-life 8-)

Hey bodhi, there's something I previously missed: the item we bought, here, do you see a link that says Document? This downloads a 57.4 MB rar file with drivers inside for this and other devices. The NEC folder looks familiar and has .ini files that may offer clues to the problems being had. Not sure if it'll help but I'll keep it both for Windows possibilities later on and the (admittedly doubtful) possibility it can help with Linux somehow.

(Wow,) is this the actual Linux driver? http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.31.14/drivers/usb/host/xhci-hcd.c

There is no sdb in this output. So does not matter what happen after this.

If you need to use the Pogo V3 then, yes, put it back together.

If I can find the time to try this again (need to dig out 2nd my USB molex cable or my USB 3.0 power hub) then I'll let you know. I'm not ready to declare that it's junk or anything like that yet :)

As the Pogoplug isn't being used for anything (future torrents if anything), I might have gotten my second wind.

Just thinking out loud, not so much a ToDo list:

1. The half-height ribbon you ordered (I think you did) might hold a clue if the screws ground certain places together. Maybe it's a crackpot theory but it sure seems worth investigating.
2. I haven't tried (or don't remember trying) a USB 2 stick in that unit. Possible the 3.0 part is whacked and 2.0 is somehow fine.
3. I might have a USB 2 cap for that hard drive. Can't remember, have to look.

I'll take care of some stressers today and come back to this with some kind of Zen mind tonight :-)

Hey Bodhi and Joey,

Does this device use the Renesas uPD720202 chipset? It says "based on". Isn't the driver available in kernel for this for x86? Is there an ARM specific version or do you have to recompile it from source? Have you guys ID'd the new hardware in dmesg yet?

Joey, without reading all the details so far on everything, have you ran or tried running # lsblk and # lspci?
I'm sure Bodhi is getting all the info he needs so far, but I'm just kind of curious.

I see a Seagate drive is showing up in lsusb, but not showing in fdisk. Is this a good, Linux file system formatted hdd and is it USB 2 or 3?

I needed to install:
# apt-get install pciutils
To run:
# lspci

Here's the results on a v3 currently running off USB.

Jeff thanks for stopping by. Ever since Adorama's Pogoplug blowout/rebate sale two years ago, I've wondered if the mpcie slot could be useful on the Pro model, since the stock wireless didn't work once Debian was installed. So my intention is the experiment to see how fast this gets USB 3 stuff over Gigabit LAN, and if it works, to have a speedy distribution point for when family drops by and they want the family media collection. Sickeningly mundane, but then again "what if" it's faster than I imagine? We'd all be $12-25 away from a frightfully useful home server for files mainly. * Honestly I don't know my ass from a hole in the ground, but am the amateur visionary once a year LOL

So to answer where I can, here goes:

I see it listed, so I'm going with yes.

BODHI!

I ran it and added it at the bottom/

Got that for you below.

The Seagate part might be an adapter that slips over a 2.5" hard drive (used from a Toshiba laptop). The Seagate adapter goes from hard drive to a USB 3.0 plug. The hard drive is formatted Ext3 and I'd copied a bunch of files to it. The OS drive is a USB 2 SanDisk Glide @ 8 GB.

Here's the results here:

lsblk
root@DebianPlug:~# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 1 7.3G 0 disk

zram2 253:2 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
zram3 253:3 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
mtdblock0 31:0 0 14M 0 disk
mtdblock1 31:1 0 114M 0 disk

Tried this too after seeing that in your diagnostics: lsblk -afm

@Joey.

Everything looks good. But you need to create the USB partition correctly. There is no partition on the drive

root@DebianPlug:~# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 1 7.3G 0 disk
`-sda1 8:1 1 7.2G 0 part /
sdb 8:16 0 465.8G 0 disk
zram0 253:0 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
zram1 253:1 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
zram2 253:2 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
zram3 253:3 0 22.1M 0 disk [SWAP]
mtdblock0 31:0 0 14M 0 disk
mtdblock1 31:1 0 114M 0 disk

See the sda partition listed above:
sda 8:0 1 7.3G 0 disk
`-sda1 8:1 1 7.2G 0 part /
and now the USB 3.0 disk
sdb 8:16 0 465.8G 0 disk

If the partition was created correctly, then you would see a similar line for sdb1.

And by the way, you can install a full Linux Mint on USB drive, there is no need for hard disk. After you booted with the Live Mint USB, plug in another USB drive and install Mint to that drive.

Does this device use the Renesas uPD720202 chipset? It says "based on". Isn't the driver available in kernel for this for x86? Is there an ARM specific version or do you have to recompile it from source? Have you guys ID'd the new hardware in dmesg yet?

The PCIe driver is OK. This Pogo V3 box uses its own pcie-oxnas driver.

The Intel xHCI driver (USB 3.0) is already mainline (this is used in the Pogo V4 too). So as they advertised that this card FW implemented Intel xHCI standard, I hope that will work. So far it does look like it's working. Joey just needs to get the drive format correctly. Then we will see.

Joey,

What comes after the above last line ([ 137.844544] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Spinning up disk.) of your dmesg output? If there is no activity shown w.r.t the HDD, then there is a chance (I could be wrong) the HDD does not get enough power to spin up.

@ everyone:
It looks very much like Habibie is right about the low power. I checked with my meter and of two 5v supplies, one is 4.6v and the other is 4.1v. One of these is a heavier-duty (supposedly) that's used to power 3.5" hard drives when an adapter is used to get SATA to USB. I haven't re-tried Pogoplug's own 5v out, but... we've been there.

* yes bodhi I installed CinnoMint 18.1 to USB and formatted the drive again. Right before I did that Mint complained it couldn't mount it because of a superblock error, and I thought " aha! that's it!" but no it wasn't all of it LOL I got a screenshot but saved it on the USB stick.

So it looks like my 5v supplies are few and far between here. Of course I'll try something heavier like a desktop computer wired out to it but I don't think I can do it today.

Below are some commands I ran once the Ext4-formatted hard drive was plugged into the USB 3 port.
My sincere thanks for everyone's time and expertise. I'll be here in the background trying to get better quality control. I'm near giving up on this project because it's hard to imagine a good power supply that isn't wasting enough power overall to negate its diminishing returns, is that t? Not done yet, just almost.

Joey,

Use a flash USB 3.0 drive and you will have enough power.
You did before and it worked.

The only problem you had at that tine was the partition format.

Joey,

I noticed from the above output of dmesg, you have a Seagate Slim 1TB SATA HDD(?) that is USB powered. If so, then any USB ports on a PogoPlug Pro should be able to deliver enough power to it. When, I tried a 2 TB Seagate 2.5" SATA HDD on my PogoPlug Pro and any of its USB2 ports had no problem to deliver power to the HDD.

Correct. The USB port should provide 5V and enough Amp to run USB 2.5" HDD.

However, I would not use USB HDD for this test, so that we can eliminate a variable out of potential problems.

Yeah Pogoplug's own USB 5v really is 5 volts.
I just tried starting it up and mounting the hard drive one last time and right when it was mounting it froze. It acted a lot friendlier than previous trials. So I'll try one last time with a USB stick formatted from Mint, and shelve this and have answered the question.

It's just not fun and even if it worked it's impracticable from being touchy from 10 angles. So here goes, give me a little bit.

OK Joey!

I've just test it with my USB power hub. It works fine :) I just dig out my Orico USB 3.0 power hub and connect it to one of the USB port on the daughter card.

Let me post the result here in a moment.

Well congratulations bodhi, but I give up. Something about when this mounts it wrecks the operation of the Pogoplug. At first I mounted it as you can see, and couldn't find files I copied there after formatting in Mint. Then I couldn't copy files to it. So I tried mounting again and got error, but a lot of telling stuff on some of the diagnostics.

583.388052 looks about right :-/

So enjoy yours, I'll try mine in Windows in a few days and if it's broke try to get a refund. Cant' say low voltage fried it either because I ran this off Pogoplug power and we've used a new USB stick and an old hard drive.

Actually, having said that it looks like there's widespread problems with XHCI/USB 3.0 and many Linux kernels.

Google'ing or DuckDuckGo'ing gets relevant results:

xHCI host not responding to stop endpoint command.
Assuming host is dying, halting host.
HC died; cleaning up
USB disconnect

Joey,

Calm down:) nothing was broken! That looks like a power problem for the USB 3.0 drive.

Unplug your FD or molex connector. Find any USB power hub, 2.0 is fine. Use that for power.

I will verify later tonight one way or the other, and I will be done with this experiment and move on to the iConnect.
